"Top Book
of the Year"

Claire Vaye Watkins' latest novel, "I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness," is a surreal, poetic rollercoaster of halo-smashing autofiction, wherein the main character (coincidentally named Claire Vaye Watkins) leaves behind her husband and newborn baby to revisit her youth and lust, to indulge in the same reckless pleasure celebrated among many male writers, and to reconcile with a dysfunctional family history that allows the fictional Watkins to confront a darkness that has followed her like a shadow all her life.
Here's a multilayered novel that playfully explodes and explores the liminal spaces of a country whose narrative has been shaped by the prevailing order of heteronormative patriarchy, wherein the architects and archivists uphold the aperture of the white male gaze.
In a lovingly subversise manner, through the story of a woman grappling with the world, the word and the West, Claire Vaye Watkins takes the reader on a head-spinning, heart-swelling journey through life, death and rebirth.
Darkness will keep your heart.
