Fuller Craft Museum is reopening today and unveiling Shelter, Place, Social, Distance: Contemporary Dialogues from the Permanent Collection, which will be on view through November 22. Shelter, Place, Social, Distance explores the new lexicon that's been created in the wake of COVID-19. As the title of the exhibit reflects, certain words and phrases have entered the national vocabulary seemingly overnight; and already-common ones have gained new meanings and connotations. Using this concept as a framework, Fuller Craft has gone into their permanent collection to find works of art that tackle themes of home, community, isolation and other related ideas. The pieces come from dozens of different artists, across many years of Fuller Craft's history, offering a wide array of perspectives. Shelter, Place, Social, Distance gives us a unique way of examining and understanding the time we live in as it continues to unfold. Today, New Bedford Whaling Museum is introducing Inside Out!, their new outdoor exhibition series. Though the inside of the museum is open, Inside Out! is situated outside in the plaza and viewable all day. Each exhibition will last two weeks and feature a selection of photographs offering a sampling of the museum's current collection. The first Inside Out! exhibit is Youth Voices for the Ocean, which will be on view until August 19. Curated by Director of Education and Science Programs Bob Rocha, Youth Voices for the Ocean is a guest exhibit by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs. The featured artwork comes from over 13,000 students across 106 countries participating in Bow Seat's annual Ocean Awareness Contest. The students were asked to explore important issues of ocean conservation and how humans have played a role in the destruction of the ocean, as well as how they can start to solve the problems they've caused.Youth Voices for the Ocean inspires awe and appreciation for the world around us and encourages us to take action for the betterment of our oceans. There will be a virtual curator talk via Zoom on Monday, August 10 at 6:00 p.m. with Alyssa Irizarry, Senior Vice President of Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs. Newport Art Museum is showing Complex Terrain(s) through September 27. Featuring artists–both contemporary and historic–Complex Terrain(s) is an examination of the landscape in art and how the genre has evolved over the years. The earliest artworks come from renowned artists like George Inness and William Trost Richards, representing the Romantic period of the nineteenth century. During this era, landscapes were portrayed as beautiful yet wild; ethereal yet frightening. These depictions recorded topography and bolstered national pride, drawing the public's eye to the newly-discovered West. In modern times, landscapes continue to capture artists' attention, however, our relationship with the landscape has become more complex over the years. Contemporary artists continue to explore the beauty of nature, but they don't shy away from areas of strife, like regions affected by climate change or conflict. Complex Terrain(s) explores the way artists have tackled the landscape genre over time, and reflects how humanity's relationship with the natural world continues to change and evolve. There will be two virtual artist talks featuring artists in Complex Terrain(s). A talk with photographer Gohar Dashti will be held Wednesday, August 12 at 4:00 p.m., and a talk with printmaker and painter Joseph Norman will be held Wednesday, August 19 at 4:00 p.m. To register, visit newportartmuseum.org/events.
