February Board Meeting Review
Last evening at the D102 Board of Education meeting for February, several topics were discussed including an update and discussion from Park Junior High Principal, Phil Abraham, Asst. Principal, David Ontiveros, and Instructional Facilitator Sam Siegfried. To view the powerpoint presentation click here. Mr. Abraham acknowledged how well PJH teachers students and staff have adapted to the changes in learning and teaching and how those lessons learned can still be used in a post-pandemic world.

Mr. Melendez led a discussion on Post-Spring Break Learning and reviewed the summary data from the Post Spring Break Survey that was sent to parents (see below). The Board then held a discussion about the impact of making changes to the schedule to create a full-day option, maintaining the current structure and what questions the board has in order to best meet the needs of all students. The Board gave guidance to Dr. Schumacher to develop an option for post-spring break following the IDPH guidance of 6 feet when feasible. This would mean that students could be in classrooms now at 3-6 feet apart if needed. In addition, the Board gave guidance that any change would occur on either April 5 or 6.

A survey will be sent to all families on Monday by the end of the day. This survey will ask parents to provide the intended model of instruction that they would prefer after Spring Break. The survey will ask some clarifying questions based on the information that was received from the first survey. Parents will be asked to select from Full Day or remaining in their current model, and then rank the importance of having Full Day versus maintaining their current teacher for the remainder of this year. Simultaneously, the building administration is looking at the results from the previous survey to ascertain impact of moves on students. The survey that comes out on Monday will have more information and descriptions on thing to consider in each model.

Due to a computer/zoom malfunction, the meeting was temporarily suspended and had to be restarted. We are working to recover the first half of the meeting's recording.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for March 18.

You can listen to the second half of the board meeting here.

Women's History Month

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.”

Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.

Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

As we move into warmer weather, Spring Break and increased activities outside of school, please continue to social distance when possible, wear face coverings and wash hands.
