Last week, the first two layers of new asphalt surface were placed on the east side of 6th Street SW (in the northbound lanes). This work occurred in the area between the 6th Street bridge over the Union Pacific railroad, to a point just north of the 31st Avenue SW intersection.

This week, the contractors will extend the asphalt to just south of Wilson Avenue, along the east side of 6th Street SW.

Barring adverse weather or unforeseen events, starting November 9, asphalt placement will be extended through the Wilson Avenue intersection, reaching the project’s northerly boundary (approximately 200 feet north of the Wilson Avenue & 6th Street SW intersection). Expected traffic impacts during this time include:

  • The Wilson Avenue & 6th Street SW intersection will be closed to westbound traffic (coming from the direction of the interstate).
  • Changeable message signs will be placed in advance of this work so motorists can plan alternative routes.
  • The work is expected to take approximately 2–3 days.

  • Eastbound traffic on Wilson Avenue will be able to turn left (to go north) or right (to go south) onto 6th Street SW. Through traffic will not be permitted across the intersection.

  • North- and south-bound traffic across 6th Street SW will be unhindered. Drivers on 6th Street SW will be able to turn west onto Wilson Avenue SW, but not east toward the interstate.

Remaining work scheduled in 2021, unless weather prompts an early winter shutdown, includes:

  • Placement of temporary asphalt wedges along areas with new curb-and-gutter. Final asphalt will be placed in spring.
  • Placement of temporary pedestrian ramps and push buttons for signal control at both the Wilson Avenue SW and 33rd Avenue SW crossings of 6th Street SW.
  • Pavement markings will be placed on 6th Street SW from 33rd Avenue Wilson Avenue. These markings will be temporary, and replaced in the spring with a more durable material. The lane configuration will be one through lane in each direction and a center turn lane.
  • Rough grading and the placement of sprayed mulch on disturbed areas. This will reduce erosion during winter before the areas can be sodded in spring.
  • Installation of traffic signage (speed limit, stop signs and other miscellaneous signs).
  • Barricading and construction zone signage will be removed.
  • Expect a return to normal traffic operations over the winter months until construction can resume in spring.
