Weekly Chamber News & Events
1st November 2021
Fellow Members,

Following recommendations from the British Retail Consortium and the Confederation of British industry the chancellor announced the halving of business rates for the 2022 / 2023 year in his Budget last Wednesday.

He has also announced that the planned increase in rates is also being scrapped for all businesses The Chancellor said that in the 2022 / 2023 tax year, pubs, music venues, cinemas, restaurants, theatres, hotels and Gyms would be able to claim a discount of 50% on their bills, up to a maximum of 110,000.

This will be a welcome relief to many of our members and is a long overdue announcement.

Regards

Richard

LEATHERHEAD DRAMA FESTIVAL CLOSURE
We were extremely sad to read the news this week that the Leatherhead Drama Festival, which has been running for 17 years, will no longer be taking place. The message from the committee reads:

It is with much regret that we have to announce the sad demise of Leatherhead Drama Festival, 17 years after its launch in 2004 and with 16 successful and rewarding festivals to its name.

It is such a huge undertaking to produce a drama festival on this scale and unfortunately we no longer have the manpower to make it happen.

The festival was the brainchild of local resident Richard Houghton whose intention was to put Leatherhead on the cultural map in response to a vicious press description of Leatherhead High Street as "one of the worst in the UK". Thanks to the patronage of Sir Michael Caine from our inauguration in 2004, delighting audiences and participants by regularly attending our gala nights we soon became the envy of other festivals and gained recognition as being the largest festival of its kind in the UK. We are sure that many people will treasure their memories of performing on a professional stage and being presented awards by Sir Michael for many years to come and for this, we are eternally grateful and proud.

We would like to thank with all our hearts the vast numbers of people who have supported the festival over the years, in numerous different ways, and we hope that you will understand that we are simply not in a position to take the festival forward into 2022 or thereafter.

To quote the Bard, "Our revels are now ended" or to quote Winnie the Pooh, "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard".

Thank you - Leatherhead Drama Festival Committee.

MVDC - TAKING A STAND AGAINST FOSSIL FUEL EXTRACTION
Mole Valley District Council resolved at a recent Council meeting to take a stand against the extraction and use of fossil fuels in the district as part of its environmental commitment and ongoing green initiatives. Additionally, a pledge to install LED lighting and Air Source Heat Pumps in Dorking Halls and Pippbrook is being fulfilled.

Councillor Claire Malcomson, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, said: “I am thrilled and very proud of the support received for the motion concerning the extraction and use of fossil fuels in the district. While planning decisions relating to mineral extraction are the responsibility of Surrey County Council, it was vitally important - despite Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) role being limited to that of a consultee - that MVDC reinforced both its commitment to reduce the existing extraction of fossil fuels and opposition to future extraction in the district.

“Support for ‘MVDC to request Surrey County Council considers not renewing existing fossil fuel permissions when they come up for renewal’ was overwhelming. I believe we have taken a big step forward in inspiring change and holding those responsible for extracting fossil fuels in Mole Valley to account.

“I am also delighted to report on the work underway to install Air Source Heat Pumps at both Dorking Halls and MVDC’s Pippbrook offices, in addition to LED lights everywhere, apart from the stage lighting at Dorking Halls. Delivering this initiative not only means achieving yet another action point in our Climate Strategy Action Plan, but it will make a tangible difference; an estimated saving of 160 tonnes of carbon emissions generated by both buildings. That is equivalent to planting 640 trees per year. A significant investment of £468,000 in this project has only been made possible thanks to Government Grant funding from Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. The progress being made is yet another key milestone in our commitment to becoming carbon neutral in the next decade.”
