Hello Friends,

Welcome to Inland SoCal United Way’s inaugural bi-monthly e-Newsletter. We are excited for the opportunity to share with you in these pages our work uniting people, ideas, and resources to empower our community and improve lives.
Especially this time of year, we are reminded how thankful we all are at ISCUW to have people like you throughout our region who support our vision to create a caring community, an extraordinary place to live, learn, work and grow.

As COVID has stayed with us throughout 2021, our communities have relied on the resources and programs provided by Inland SoCal United Way & Inland SoCal 211+ more than ever, and we are thankful that you have helped us meet these challenges head on. We’ve provided job training and readiness, and connected job seekers to local, living wage jobs through our 211 Careers program. We’ve conducted mental health intervention to hundreds of residents that have reached out to the Inland SoCal Crisis HELPLine. We’ve helped over 12,000 families stay housed throughout the pandemic by providing over $115 million in Emergency Rental Assistance. And we’ve done it all together with the support of our community, our clients and with YOU, our supporters.

For many years the Tuesday following Thanksgiving has been known as “Giving Tuesday.” Nonprofits typically use this day to ask for contributions, but at ISCUW we will once again be flipping Giving Tuesday on its head and use it as an opportunity to say THANK YOU to all of you who have been giving throughout the year and years to make our work possible. Whether you work in partnership with us at an agency, volunteer your time supporting our programs, or give financially, it is your dedication to improving the lives of individuals and families in the communities that we serve that we are most thankful for this year. We look forward to bringing you updates and insights and continuing to work together to make the Inland SoCal region an extraordinary place to live, learn, work, and grow.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Albertsons, Pavillions, and Vons Foundation Nourishing Neighbors donated $125,000 to provide meals to children.
Inland SoCal United Way is pleased to be the recipient of a generous grant from the Albertsons, Pavillions, and Vons Foundation Nourishing Neighbors that will help provide much needed assistance to the children in our community impacted by food insecurity.

The grant is made possible by Albertsons, Pavilions, and Vons Foundation Nourishing Neighbors and is meant to help feed vulnerable children during the summer months and beyond.

Many hunger relief organizations continue to be overloaded by increased hunger issues caused by the pandemic. Children can be especially susceptible to hunger during the summer months, weekends, and holidays when school is out. Through the Nourishing Neighbors initiative, Albertsons, Pavilions, and Vons Foundation continues to focus on addressing hunger issues in the communities they serve.
The Meals program is part of their latest efforts.

Albertsons, Pavilions, and Vons Foundation Nourishing Neighbors provided $100,000 to support the CalFresh program. Additionally, an additional $25,000 worth of gift cards was provided for general 211 assistance.

"We’re grateful to Albertsons, Pavilions, and Vons Foundation Nourishing Neighbors and their generous customers for helping fight hunger in our community,” said Kimberly Starrs, Vice President of External Affairs. “These funds will help the children of our community with the most basic human need of being nourished.”

Thanks to Albertsons, Pavilions, and Vons Foundation Nourishing Neighbors. We are grateful to be part of the Nourishing Neighbors Family and working together to make a difference!
LIVE UNITED SPOTLIGHT
Meet Nicole Lunbeck, Payroll & HR Manager
Nicole joined the United Way team in September 2021 as the Payroll & Human Resources Manager. Before joining United Way, she had the opportunity of working in human resources for Amazon, Inc. and Enterprise Holdings.
While working with Enterprise Holdings, she was active in their United Way workplace campaign and saw how United Way was supporting the community. She heard directly from a client how United Way helped change her life and this presentation stayed with her during her career.

While working at Amazon, she came across the Payroll & Human Resources Manager position at United Way online. She said she hadn't even thought United Way had positions that matched with her career, only thinking of the amazing people she saw delivering services in the community or coming to her workplace to share their stories.

"The position with United Way excited me because I discovered it was possible to not only work in my career field, but also know that the company and what they did each day would benefit the community, society, and the world.", said Nicole. She continued, "Now that I work here, I can see how this organization cares for its employees to the same level it cares about the community."

When not working, she spends a lot of time with family, going to Disneyland every chance she gets, and attends concerts or music festivals. Welcome Nicole Lunbeck to the United Way Team. #LiveUnited.

MyShake App
Every three minutes, an earthquake strikes California. Luckily, the MyShake App can help you and your family to not be caught off guard. The MyShake App (available for free on the Apple App store and Google Play) should be part of every Californian’s emergency plan. Here at United Way, we are partnering with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to spread the word about Earthquake Warning California, the nation’s first statewide earthquake warning system. This October, in conjunction with the Great California ShakeOut annual earthquake drill, we encourage all Californians to update their emergency plan, download the MyShake App, and adjust their phone settings to enable critical technology to work as intended. CalSavers Employer Compliance Deadline Approaching!
CalSavers is California’s retirement savings program designed for the millions of Californians who lack a way to save for retirement at their job. CalSavers was created by legislation passed in 2016 requiring California employers who do not offer an employer sponsored plan and have five or more employees to facilitate CalSavers – an automatic enrollment individual retirement account (IRA) with no employer fees or fiduciary liability.
California’s new mandate is phased in over three years, with deadlines based on employer size. Employers with five or more employees have until June 30, 2022, but are encouraged to register early. The registration deadlines for employers with more than 50 employees have passed. Eligible employers who have not yet registered should do so as soon as possible to avoid penalties. Learn how to get started at CalSavers.com.
