November 2021
President's Greeting
Dear Colleagues,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at Jenny Lin's fantastic presentation about Shostakovich and his Preludes and Fugues. Ms. Lin touched on Soviet History, Shostakovich's life and music, piano technique, and also treated us to a brilliant performance of a Prelude and Fugue. If you missed the presentation, you can now watch the video on our website.

The Halloween Recital was a great success, with plenty of spooky costumes and great music. Many thanks to Diana Tetzlaff, Shizue Sano, and Yun Lee for running the recital so smoothly.

Coming up is the Music for Hope Recital on November 14th at 2pm. I hope you will take a few minutes to support the performers by viewing the recital on our website. This recital is a fundraiser for the Music for Hope program, which provides lessons to students in need. Please consider making a difference in the life of a child by making a small donation to this program.

Our Teachers' Masterclass (online) is coming up on November 22nd at 10:00am. Our NEPTA colleagues Simon Xu, Wanda Paik, and Jia Shi will be playing works by Scriabin, Liszt, and Chopin. Due to unexpected circumstances, Mr. Meng-Chieh Liu will be unable to teach the class as planned. Fortunately, the noted Scrabin scholar and interpreter Dmitry Rachmanov has graciously agreed to teach this class on very short notice. Please join us in what promises to be a fascinating masterclass.

Finally, while November is just beginning, it will soon be time to register students for the Winter Recital Series. The Junior I recital (grades K-4) deadline is coming up in just over a month on December 9th. Recitals details are forthcoming, but it is never too early to start planning.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

With best wishes,
Sivan Etedgee
President

A Few Takeaways From This Year's National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy
by Isabel Marcheselli, NCTM
This year, I had the pleasure of attending the virtual National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP) thanks to a NCKP teacher’s grant. It was a wonderfully enriching experience, and I am glad that I treated myself to this event for the first time ever, after more than eight years of piano teaching. I am writing this article to share a few takeaways from this conference that have been running through my mind and firing up my piano teaching world ever since. I will provide a few insights that I obtained from the seminars that stood out to me.

One of the very first seminars that I viewed was, “What If You Came First? Self-care for Teachers in Turbulent Times.” This powerful seminar touched me personally as a piano teacher who, like other teachers, really had to rally to keep in step with the changes Covid-19 brought when it hit the world in March 2020. For any piano teacher who has coped with stress as a result of this pandemic, the messages were that you are not alone and don’t be afraid to stop as often as you can and ask yourself, “What do I need right now?” A panel of presenters suggested that you remain in touch with your own needs, stay grounded in your body, take a walk, notice your breathing, and formulate your own positive mantras to address your concerns and feelings during your teaching day.
