Dear Friends,

Summer is in full swing, although it feels very different than summers past. Usually Sonoma Plaza is bustling with people, and most of us are enjoying large outdoor parties, concerts, sporting events and family gatherings. While we can't do all of those things, at TSS we are focusing on what we can do to fulfill our mission to engage and support teens' work-readiness skills and experiences that empower them to succeed.

Following all Covid-19 protocols, we've devised ways to provide programming for teens at TSS and in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club. Starting July 7, we will offer some outdoor activities, including building a container garden in our parking lot, opportunities to c ook for the homeless, completing the Tree of Possibilities project , and hikes. We are excited about the expanded array of activities and services we can offer the valley's teens by greater collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club.

Our message last month following George Floyd's murder stated that we were committed to listening and learning about how bias and racism influences our actions and to discover how we can make a difference. Three things came from our discussion so far:  1) we need to educate ourselves on the history of racism and white privilege; 2) we need to arm our teens with information and tools to help them deal with prejudice they may face in the workplace or in their everyday lives; and 3) we need to add board members of color to reflect our community and provide perspective on all we are doing.

We realize there is much more to do, but we are tackling all three of these things on the organizational level now. TSS and the Boys & Girls Club are jointly facilitating a teen council which will be teen-led and provide a safe place for teens to talk about anything goin g on in their lives, ch allenges they face, how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected them and their families, and how they can act to create change.

We are convinced that with your help and the spirit of Sonoma Valley teens, brighter days are ahead.

In Kindness,

THANKS TO YOU, WE DID IT!

Two months ago, we announced that thanks to Chuck and Cathy Williamson, our Cowboy Cab sponsors, and the Teen Services' Board, we would be able to match donations to our Fund-a-Need up to $50,000. Unbelievably, thanks to the support of friends like you, we raised $53,125 and surpassed our match goal!

If you have not yet donated, it is not too late to add your name to the list of those who support Teen Services and empower the teens of Sonoma Valley. And if you did make a donation,

THANK YOU!!!

THE WHEELS JUST KEEP ON TURNIN'...

COVID-19 put a halt to most of our activities last March, but not with Operation Bicycle (OB). In fact, quite the opposite as bicycles became the perfect solution for both exercise and transportation. OB Manager Adrian Palenchar estimates that they now service at least 10 bikes per day (though it feels like 15!) which would mean that during the last three months, 500-600 bikes were made ready for eager customers.

Servicing that many bikes would not have been possible without a few changes to OB routines. Work stations and procedures were adjusted to follow COVID protocols. Hours of operation were changed so that most of the work is done in the mornings and then open up for customer drop-off, pick-up, and sales in the afternoons.

Adrian is supported by a talented team, including long-time assistant Simon Cutler and teen mechanics Diego Flores (above center) , Tyler Merkins (above right) , and Lucas Stevenson. Volunteer Tom Sours (above left) is another key player. When asked why he enjoys helping out, he responded, "As an engineer I love working on mechanical things. It's very satisfying to repair and bring things back into service. Adrian is a great teacher and an interesting guy to be around. The teens bring a great energy. It's just a fun place to be. I get a lot more out of being there than I put in."

Customers are happy too - just take a look at the rave reviews on Next Door or take the word of Jim Lauer, happy owner of a bike from Teen Services : "Teen Services is great. They get kids on bikes -- for reasonable prices."

Adrian reflects:  "It's been really inspiring to see so many people returning to their bicycles after years off. We've been happy to help people get out riding again and provide a much-needed outlet for exercise. I really hope people continue riding as much once COVID is contained."

We agree. Operation Bicycle is a great place to buy a bike or get your old one repaired; but more importantly, it is a place where teens learn skills in mechanics and customer service and how to run a small business. That's what Teen Services is all about.

So, thank you for coming in and for supporting Sonoma Valley teens.
CONGRATULATIONS TO DIEGO

Diego Flores received his Ready to Work Certificate in the summer of 2016 and immediately became an active member of the Teen Services' family. Always with a smile, Diego was there to greet you at Cowboy Cab or make sure your bike was in working order as an employee at Operation Bicycle
(above). Of his time at OB, Diego mentioned: "I like working with my hands - the mechanical part of the job. I really like the learning part as well, because there is a lot to learn."

Diego will have a lot more to learn in the area of mechanics as he heads off to Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont in August. There he will join the Army ROTC as a member of the Corps of Cadets, while studying mechanical engineering.

Congratulations, Diego Flores - Class of 2020!
HOW DOES OUR LOVIN' OVEN GARDEN GROW?

Thank you to Kiwanis of Sonoma Plaza who planted the first seeds for our garden and to everyone who responded to our request for additional help. Your generous donations not only mean the garden will become a reality, but we will be able to upgrade our original plans!

The new Lovin' Oven Garden will:
-  Provide fresh produce and herbs for Lovin' Oven culinary projects including LOCA and dinners for homeless clients of Sonoma Overnight Support.
-  Introduce teens to agriculture/gardening as a potential career path, a hobby, a therapeutic activity.
-  Equip teens with basic and practical farming and gardening skills they can use to gain employment.
