Rabbi Kenter's Dvar

There is a famous ad campaign from Snickers called, “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry.” This campaign was so successful that it ran around the globe (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqyB4zCNJmY ). It introduced many of us to the idea of being “hangry.” When we are hungry, often the worst of ourselves comes out and it can sometimes be a challenge in the moment to realize that it is our hunger making us angry or to grant the individual some slack because you know why they are in a bad mood.

The Israelites have now been wandering in the desert for 4 years, and without a good water source nearby following Miriam’s death, they get grumpy. This is quite understandable, all things considered. And yet to Moses, this is just the Israelites being grumpy and complaining yet again. He cannot see that in this moment their concerns are valid (as opposed to so many other times). Perhaps that’s why Moses is commanded to talk to the rock. God wants Moses to not simply respond out of frustration (i.e. hit the rock), but attempt to understand the source of the frustration, by engaging with the people. Moses is unable to do so and instead yells at the people and hits the rock, bringing water, but leading to his punishment to never be able to enter the land of Israel.

In our current reality, so many of us are thirsty for connection and hungry for normalcy. As we navigate this challenging time, we are called to engage with one another just as Moses was commanded to centuries ago. To not only respond to the reaction in hunger and thirst, but rather to meaningfully engage. To talk, to share, and to connect. It is by those actions that we can find solutions and a small taste of that connection and normalcy that we seek. We will be nourished by providing and receiving the sustenance that can come from human relationships. And with that in hand, the Promised Land cannot be too far behind.

Shabbat Shalom

There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award.  These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow.  Below you will find some of the events in our community from the last few weeks. Please continue to share with us your happy occasions so that we may share them here in the future.

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue. We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!

KBI OFFICE

As our building remains closed for the time being, a rotation of staff is set in place to assure that mail is received and phone messages responded to. We are attempting to do our best to maintain the outstanding service you've come to expect from our congregation, but it is still likely to take a little bit longer than usual to respond to requests and we ask for your patience as we do our best to pivot to this new reality. During this time of moving much of our operations to virtual platforms, the best way to get in touch with any member of the staff is to email them. A staff directory can be found here . As a reminder, while staff may be present in the building at times, we still ask that you not "drop by" as we are attempting to limit everyone's exposure.
