Airside Updates      Administrative Updates

I hope May has treated everyone well especially in light of the environment we're currently living in. We certainly have an abundance of things to be thankful for this month including Mothers, United States military personnel, Health Care professionals, Essential personnel, and H.E.B employees, to name just a few. On behalf of my coworkers at TAP, I want to express my appreciation for our HYI community of Aviation pros as well. No matter what your specific responsibilities are, thanks to you, the Airport continues to operate safely, and with a renewed sense of purpose.

The new date for Our Go Wheels Up/AOPA event (that was originally scheduled for this weekend) has been tentatively reset for May 28-29, 2021. The formal announcement from our friends at GWU can be found below. We're excited that the show will go on, and believe it will be a boon for the Airport, our Customers, and Central Texas.

There are ongoing projects and initiatives that we continue to work on, and promise to keep you informed in the weeks and months to come. Frankly, we've intentionally tried to minimize interrupting our airport Customers of late so everyone can tend to their own business and personal priorities. We're optimistic about where the Airport is heading, and need each and every one of you to participate in its future plans.

Please be safe, fly safe, and treat others like you want to be treated.

TRAFFIC OPERATIONS

We monitor the operations each month to he lp us secure funding for future airport projects and improvements. Below are the yearly totals:

2017 total operations: 66,781
2018 total operations: 59,679
2019 total operations: 63,955
2020 operations to date: 19,360

Please note, these numbers do not reflect operations outside of the tower hours of 7:00am to 7:00pm.
FLIGHT SCHOOLS AT HYI

For awhile, during the most stringent stay at home orders, the flights schools at HYI had to close their doors due to the inability to keep social distance during flight.

As the state begins to open up under the direction of Governor Abbott, we checked in with the flight schools on the airfield and good news - they're all back open!  It is a slow process, especially with the new sanitizing and mask guidelines, but all are accepting new students at this time.

For more information, please contact the school of your choice. A list of on-airfield flight schools can be found here: http://flysanmarcos.com/at-the-airport/airport-directory/?cat=school.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM GO WHEELS UP
Friends,

Today, May 29, 2020, was to be the kickoff of Go Wheels Up! Texas 2020 featuring the AOPA Fly-In. Regrettably, COVID-19 saw things very differently.

After careful consideration of this ongoing pandemic, and in consultation with the City of San Marcos and our featured sponsor, AOPA, we have decided that moving forward with a fall 2020 event wouldn't be prudent. We believe our best efforts would be to present a bigger and better Go Wheels Up! Texas May 28-29, 2021.

While we would love nothing more than to bring you an event later this year, the uncertainty of world events makes it unlikely that we could get all the necessary approvals or sponsorships within a workable timeframe. Additionally, while there are wildly opposing views on what the status of the pandemic will be by the fall, we're choosing to err on the side of caution. The last thing in the world we want to do is create an unsafe environment for our patrons, performers, staff or contractors.

We are, however, much more confident that by late spring 2021 the world will be getting back to some sort of normal, especially with outdoor events. We look forward to bringing you an incredible experience next year.

Your support is our most valued asset. Please check back often and let us hear from you. Tickets for next year's event will go on-sale soon. If you purchased tickets to Go Wheels Up! Texas 2020 and haven't yet requested a refund, you may still do so, but your tickets will be honored at next year's event.

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay strong. We're all in this together.
