Three Sisters Salad
Serves 4

The "three sisters" are corn, beans, and squash (like zucchini). Native Americans planted them together in the garden because they help each other grow. The "three sisters" also work together to give your body a nutritious meal!

Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz.) low-sodium or no salt added beans such as black, kidney, or garbanzo beans
  • 1 can (11 oz.) corn with red and green peppers drained or 1 cup fresh or frozen corn, thawed
  • 1 small zucchini chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons of lime juice (about 1/2 lime)
  • 1 jalapeño-- seeds removed and finely chopped (optional)

Directions

  1. Carefully open can of beans. Drain beans and pour into a bowl.
  2. Add corn, zucchini, cilantro, lime juice, and jalapeño (optional).
  3. Stir to combine. Serve right away or refrigerate for later.

YOUTH LEADERS
Healthy RC starts off the school year with its newest Youth Leaders
Healthy RC officially welcomes several new Healthy Youth Leaders to the 2020-2021 cohort! With the evolution of the Youth Leaders program, Healthy RC has been able to provide a comprehensive curriculum of leadership training through public speaking opportunities, research projects, and interactive filming projects. The program reached a record number of applicants this year with 31 applicants (double from last year). The rigorous application process included a writing exercise and a virtual panel interview with our current Youth Leaders and program director.  With already 18 returning Youth Leaders from last year, the program accepted 11 new participants. They range from 7th through 12th grade, and include schools throughout the city (Rancho Cucamonga HS, Los Osos HS, Alta Loma HS, Etiwanda HS, Colony HS, Summit Intermediate, United Christian Academy, and Ruth Musser Middle School). The first meeting on Wednesday was fantastic, allowing them to connect for the first time in break-out rooms and learn about each other’s working styles and communication needs while working in a team. Healthy RC is excited to have these passionate, creative, and thoughtful youth and welcomes them to a new year of learning how to successfully navigate through challenges and addressing the needs of the teen community!
COMPASSIONATE RC
Join us for our Virtual Courageous Conversations
The Compassionate Community Subcommittee continues to host Virtual Courageous Conversations. The events these past several weeks have disrupted our lives and challenged us in many ways, once again putting the spotlight on issues of racial equity and social justice. This subcommittee will continue to work together to ensure that we can provide the #RCcommUNITY a safe space for all voices to be acknowledged and heard.

Through these community conversations, attendees are able to share in a judgement-free environment their lived experiences and perspectives on topics of race, racism and social justice. Through these dialogues, we hope to develop specific action plans tailored for our communities as we remain committed in dismantling any forms of racism and racial inequities in Rancho Cucamonga. The Compassionate Community Subcommittee meets regularly* every 3rd Tuesday of the month from 12:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Join us as we learn together and try to find a common ground in addressing these important issues, and identify practical and feasible solutions that foster healing and unity in our City.

If you are interested in joining us or for any inquiries, email HealthyRC@CityofRC.us or call (909) 774-2043.

Helpful Resources
In collaboration with the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library, the Compassionate Community Subcommittee recommends the following resources and reading lists that may provide additional guidance on important conversations regarding the topics of race, social justice, and celebration of diversity:
Together, we can create a unifying and compassionate environment for everyone!

We are here for you at our Monthly RC Community Check-ins
As a response to the need of more consistent mental health support groups in Rancho Cucamonga, Healthy RC partnered with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Pomona Valley to provide virtual community conversations called Community Check-ins. We encourage people to just grab a cup of tea and get comfortable at home, while logging on the Community Check-in safe space to share what’s on your mind.

Check-ins are scheduled on the first Monday of every month from 6:00 p.m-7:30 p.m. The purpose of this group is to share, listen, collaborate and learn from your fellow community members. NAMI Executive Director James Curtis facilitates and guides the conversation so that people can find the right tools, resources, and strategies to practice self-care and wellness. For more information, simply click on the flyer above!

The City of Rancho Cucamonga recognizes the importance of supporting the community through mental health support, suicide prevention, and a road to recovery. This year's theme for #SuicidePreventionWeek2020 is Hope, Resilience & Recovery.

Pain isn't always obvious, but most suicidal people show some signs that they are thinking about taking their life. The signs may appear in conversations, through their actions, or in social media posts. If you observe one or more of these warning signs, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change, STEP IN or SPEAK UP.

Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or visit
