Dean's Message
Thank you for participating in the short survey last week regarding which spaces in Architecture Hall need the greatest enhancements and what creates the most roadblocks to your day. Our Student Advisory Board will meet with the architectural firm APMA today to dive a bit deeper and have conversations about these opportunities and roadblocks. This is an important step in the programming for Phase 2 of the Architecture Hall Renovation project.

As we move forward, keep an eye out for additional opportunities to be involved!

ADVISING CORNER
Spring 2022 Class Registration
Spring advising season is in full swing! Priority Registration for the Spring Pre-Session and Regular Spring Semester began Monday, October 25. If you have not done so already, please make an advising appointment to meet with your assigned academic advisor.

Last Day to Withdraw from a Course
The advising staff would like to remind faculty and students that the last day to WITHDRAW from one or more full semester courses for fall 2021 is Friday, November 12.

A few things you should know about “Withdrawing” from a course include:

·NEVER withdraw from a course without checking with your advisor first.
·Be sure to discuss with Scholarships and Financial Aid the impact withdrawing will have on your scholarships and aid packages.
·Be sure to discuss with University Housing how withdrawing may impact your housing eligibility.
·If your full-time or part-time enrollment is verified to receive discounts on your medical/car insurance or your parents’ health and auto insurance, withdrawing from classes may affect your eligibility for continued discounts.

If you have questions about withdrawing from a course, please stop in and see a member of our advising staff.

LIBRARY NOTICE
Construction on phase one of the Architecture Hall Renovations will begin in late November, and as a result the Architecture Library will close its current location on November 15, re-opening in its new location August 2022.
Last day to access the collection and the service point will be Friday, November 12.

If students have materials checked out, they can return them on their due date to any other library, a close option would be the Music Library in the lower level of Westbrook Music. There is also a book return box outside Westbrook & Architecture Hall facing the parking lot. Almost all books for undergraduate students are not due until the end of the semester.

We are moving a core collection of architecture books to storage in the lower level of Architecture Hall. We are encouraging people to go to the Music Library in Westbrook if they need anything out of that collection. Our catalog will reflect the new locations for everything. Much of the collection is going out to the Library Depository Retrieval Facility on East Campus. Students needing anything from our LDRF should use the document delivery service to make their requests. We will retrieve the book and make it available at any library location that the student indicates.

ARCHITECTURE
Our curriculum emphasizes building design and understands the role various factors play in the built environment, including climate change, sustainability, building sciences technology, artificial intelligence, smart building technology, generative design processes, health and wellness and material construction. These factors result in a more significant proportion of our courses focusing on STEM-related aspects and integrating these factors and knowledge throughout the curriculum. I am happy to announce the BSD-Arch, and M.Arch programs in architecture have successfully applied for and received a CIP code change to 04.0902 Architectural and Building Sciences/Technology. More-
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
It is that time of year in which we find ourselves transitioning into the colder months as the end of the semester quickly approaches. This is a good time to begin thinking about research opportunities as the annual University Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) program applications open up on November 15th. UCARE is a great way to link up with faculty to conduct compelling research that will expand your knowledge and skills but also contribute to the production of new knowledge. Did I mention that it is a paid gig? Reach out to your faculty to see if they have any ideas for projects that fit the bill.
For starters, I will give you an idea of the type of research that I have been working on with my UCARE student, Jake Essink. We are researching this thing called spatial disparity, which is the unequal distribution of qualities or resources and services depending on area or location. More-
INTERIOR DESIGN
Happy November! This week we are featuring Professor Nate Bicak and the work that is being developed in the DSGN 410-Learning Lab Collaborate Studio. Bicak has been an integral faculty member in the Interior Design Program since 2016 providing valuable learning experiences in making, fabrication and material studies for interior design. His scholarship in “Educating About Making” has resulted in many peer-reviewed international conference presentations. Bicak has also taught five consecutive years in the fourth-year interdisciplinary collaborative design studio. His scholarly approach to fostering collaboration in the classroom has also been recognized for its contribution to design education. To learn more about who Bicak is outside of the “design educator” label click here . More-
