We believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. KidSportâ„¢ provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.

KidSport Kamloops is a local chapter of KidSport Canada.  Funds raised locally are spent locally and are distributed as grants to cover registration and/or equipment fees associated with participation in a season of sport.

Even if it feels like the world has come to a standstill, that doesn't mean you should.

We've always believed in the power of movement and a healthy lifestyle. Now that many of us find ourselves isolated at home, cut off from each other and more sedentary than usual, movement has become more important than ever.

Getting to know our Local Sport Organizations

Kamloops Rowing Club

We are the Kamloops Rowing Club ( KRC) : a public rowing club that serves Kamloops and surrounding communities with programming teaching individuals how to row and also providing recreational rowing opportunities. Our season spans from May-October. We supply all equipment for those who take lessons with us and/or row with our club.

Can you tell us a little about your club and what your club does?

We are a registered society with the BC Government that provides activities in the Olympic sport of rowing to our community. Our club history from its incorporation in 1990 includes competitive and recreational programming which occurs at our venue on Hwy 5A , Shumway Lake. Our history includes high school, university and adult aged rowers ( 15-70 y.o.). We have hosted club exchanges, 1993 Canada Summer Games and 2011 Western Canada Summer Games rowing competitions. We have been used as a training venue for Olympic rowers & University summer rowing crews (UBC, TRU) . Our club members have raced in Canadian and USA regattas. We have enjoyed moments in time of being a club with a hired coach to run programming for a large number of rowers , a medium sized club with a volunteer coach and hired university summer students who trained and worked as assistant club coaches to run University and High School rowing programming focused on competitive activities and, currently, a volunteer club coach with a small number of club members focused on rowing for exercise and enjoyment of the sport. Our club runs weekly programming for those who know how to row during the ice-off season between May-October. Learn to row programs are a 6 - lesson package offered each year to introduce people to the sport. Once successfully completed, learn to row graduates can join the club and row for the rest of the season with regular coaching. There is always a safety/coachboat on the water with our rowers to ensure their safety and to provide coaching.

How long has your club been active and operating?

The Kamloops Rowing Club was incorporated as a BC Society in April 1990 and has been operational, delivering rowing programming, since that date.

Where does your club do the majority of training?

Our historic " turquoise" boathouse is located at Shumway Lake Watersports Facility, 5156/5160 Princeton Kamloops Hwy on Highway 5A. We are a ~ 20-minute drive from Kamloops. Our boathouse houses our rowing shells and support equipment. We share the lake and land venue with 2 other clubs ( Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club ( KCKC) and Kamloops Waterski Club ( KWSC).

Describe your club athletes in one word.

Consistent

What are your proudest club accomplishments or achievements that you'd like to highlight?

Over the years of operation, our water has been rowed by Canadian National Team rowers for training prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
In 1993, we hosted the Canada Summer Games rowing events.
In 2003, a former National Team Rower living in Kamloops, a high school teacher who had raced with the club when she was in high school in Kamloops and the Club coach at the time, created the University College of the Cariboo ( UCC) rowing team and a high school rowing team and, over the next few years, KRC rowers appeared at numerous BC regatta start lines.
In 2006, a club member/UCC rower raced for the first time at the Canadian University Rowing Championships in St. Catherines, Ontario. This was the first time Kamloops/ UCC had a seat at the table with all of the big-name University rowing teams across Canada (UBC, UVIC, SFU, U of Ontario @ Western, etc).
In 2008, our club members poured a cement floor in our 80x30' boathouse with the generous donation of materials by a rower's parents from Chase.
In 2011 , we were hosts to the Western Canada Summer Games in which rowers from across Canada raced on our waters.
In 2020 : We are proud to still be operational and introducing the beautiful sport of rowing to the Kamloops community

What is an inspiring moment that you've witnessed from one of your club members?

As a coach/president, my members inspire me when they return each season to row and enjoy the sport. That, in itself, tells me we are doing something right as we share our passion for the sport. As the former UCC Rowing Coach, I was always inspired when I launched crews at a regatta. To me, it represented all the elements of training coming together to inspire confidence in rowers to put it on the line and see where their learning could take them.

Tell us something that not everyone would know about your club?

When we hosted the 2011 WCSG, we attached , by hand, 1400 buoys to the stainless steel race course to create the 6 lane, 2km long, race course on the surface of Shumway Lake.
We left the buoys in for the rest of the summer and when they were detached from the race course and pulled out of the water that fall, we had to individually hand wash each of the 1400 buoys as each of them had an alkaline / algae ring on them and they had to be returned to Fort Langley Rowing Club who loaned them to us for the event! Lessoned learned the hard way !

How do people connect with the club to learn more and get involved?

Sincerely,

Kamloops Sports Council
