Important Reminders from Kaiser Permanente
We're at a critical time. COVID-19 is still on the rise in many of our communities. California is continuing to take steps to limit the spread of the virus, including promoting the use of masks, closing some indoor activities, and strengthening the approach to social distancing. By following these guidelines, our collective actions will help slow the spread of illness and protect ourselves and each other.
Dr. Steve Parodi is an Associate Executive Director at the Permanente Medical Group and an infectious disease specialist. He wants all of his patients to know these facts about the virus:
- Some people never develop symptoms or get such mild ones they don't know they're infected. They can still spread the coronavirus to others if they don't take precautions like social distancing and wearing a mask in public.
- While some people are at higher risk for serious illness, all people are at risk for infection.
- It's hard to know who'll be most affected. Most of the deaths have been among the elderly, but young and healthy people have also become infected with the virus and have developed serious illness or complications. Preventing this disease is important for each and every one of us.
We also know:
- The virus spreads through close contact, especially when people are within 6 feet of each other for more than 15 minutes.
- When everyone wears masks in public, we greatly reduce the risk of spread.
- Washing hands, not touching your face, and staying at least 6 feet from those not in your household also reduces spread.

Lafayette Art & Wine Festival: Let’s celebrate our 25th Anniversary in 2021!
In light of the growing new cases of COVID-19 in the Bay Area the Lafayette Chamber Board of Directors has decided, in the interest of everyone’s health and safety, to cancel this year’s Art & Wine Festival scheduled for September 26-27.
Some of you might be wondering why we waited so long to announce what now seems obvious? First, we were holding out for the miracle that just did not come in time. Losing an event like Lafayette’s annual “end of the summer party” is a tough blow to the community, the businesses, the artists and our guests that often total more than 80,000. We have all sacrificed and suffered enough. Cancelling the festival is last thing we wanted to do! We love this event as much as you. The revenue generated helps pay for our valued community services (like Trick or Treat Street and our Rock the Plaza Concert Series) and has donated well over $500K to the non-profit beneficiaries we support including our schools.
On behalf of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and
Eckerstrom Productions
(who has partnered with us since the very first festival in 1996) we wish to thank you for your support and participation in this annual event. We are sorry for any problems this may create for everyone involved. Please stay safe.
We’ll be back for the 25
th
Annual Lafayette Art & Wine Festival on the weekend of September 18-19, 2021. For the most up-to-date info, connect with us:
Sincerely,
Jay Lifson, Executive Director, Lafayette Chamber of Commerce

The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Get a PUA Grant When You’re Self-Employed
Gini Graham Scott published an
article on Medium about the difficulties of getting a PUA grant for funds due to not getting work if you’re self-employed. Here's an excerpt:
Supposedly, the Public Unemployment Assistance (PUA) grant is supposed to handle claims by those who are self-employed and have lost income due to COVID-19. But as I have discovered, this can be a very difficult undertaking for some types of self-employed people, most notably freelance writers, artists, musicians, and professionals with private practices, such as coaches and consultants. I discovered this from my own experience which has been an absolute nightmare, and it’s a situation experienced by many thousands if not millions of people. There are nearly 50,000 members of a Facebook group devoted to questions about these claims — the Unofficial California Employment Help group that has over 49,000 members.
