Greetings, From Poland
An Article by English Teacher Ashley Harbel
|
|
Andy Stone and I had the privilege of spending my April vacation with 10 amazing students from SRHS. We traveled across Germany and Poland, visiting sites in Berlin, Warsaw, and around Kraków, studying pre, during, and post WWII history, diving deep into the intricacies of the Holocaust and the Cold War. These students never ceased to amaze me with their thirst for knowledge, soaking up the history and culture, trying new foods, making new friends, and experiencing a different life than we see in New Hampshire.
One of the most important aspects of this trip was our trip to the Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz-Birkneau. Throughout our trip, students became witnesses to the horrors of the Holocaust and learned how much their voices matter and how they can make a difference when standing up to hate.
“I though this trip was really eye opening because you can read all about a topic or a place but unless you learn from people's experiences or visit a place yourself, you will never know the full story.” - Jackie G. (Grade 11)
“I can still feel the indent of the stairs from when they were walking down to the basement of the underground cells in Auschwitz.” - Maddie D. (Grade 11)
“I really thought that it was empowering to go to Auschwitz. I have read many books and heard many people talk about it, but seeing it in person didn't need any words. You could see the destruction.” -Jocelyne L. (Grade 9)
Please take a minute to stop and ask the students about their experience - it is one that we will never forget.

Senior Spotlight: Haley Clement

As a school counselor, one of the jobs we are tasked with is helping students to identify their future career paths. It is much easier when you meet a student who says that they have known what they wanted to do their entire life. Haley Clement is that student. Haley will be a Cosmetologist. Notice that I did not say Haley wants to be or Haley hopes to be… I know that Haley will be a cosmetologist. Haley came to me as a sophomore to talk about attending a school outside of our district because we did not offer classes in her future vocation. Haley was relentless in her pursuit of this approval. She was thrilled when the approval came through and it was obvious to everyone who met her, because she talked about it non-stop, that she was on the path that she was meant to travel down.
Despite the lengthy travel time between the two schools, Haley has continued to maintain positive connections with the faculty and staff here at Sanborn. Her math teacher, Sam Parsons states “I've had Haley in class during both of my years so far at Sanborn. Haley has always been able to brighten spirits in my class, even though she's decided that Math is her least favorite subject. I've enjoyed watching Haley grow as a student these two years, and it's been great to watch her successes at Pinkerton cosmo school. Congrats Haley, good luck!”
Haley is one of those students who seems to be wise beyond her years. Her English teacher, Nicole St. Jean reports “I've really enjoyed getting to know Haley the past couple of years. She is friendly, kind, and mature. She is very personable and gets along with everyone. Amongst her friends, she is the voice of reason and gives very good advice. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future has in store of her. I know she'll succeed in her beauty school endeavors and beyond!”
Haley has tremendous skill in the Cosmetology field and she was asked to participate in Skills USA by her Pinkerton teachers. Haley’s school counselor Megan Arena feels “ "It's been a pleasure getting to know Haley this year and learning about her passion for cosmetology. She's a bright, friendly young woman who works hard to take care of others and will be great with working with clients in the future. She takes pride in her esthetician work at Pinkerton and I'm so excited she's furthering her education at Empire Beauty School next year!"
It is evident to everyone that meets Haley that she has found her passion. What is most evident about Haley is her willingness and drive to make her goals happen, she is not leaving anything to luck or chance. I look forward to someday driving by a salon and seeing the name of Haley Clement as the chief proprietor!

Senior Spotlight: Kaylee Taylor

John Steinbeck famously said that “you can only understand people if you feel them in yourself”. That’s empathy, showing concern and care for others.
Kaylee Taylor exemplifies empathy at Sanborn. Kaylee moves effortlessly between social groups, in class and in the halls. Over the 3 years I have known Kaylee, I have admired how gracefully she connects with her peers. It's Kaylee’s gift of empathy which allows her to relate to everyone. If you have ever seen her distract an administrator or teacher with polite off topic questions, it’s pretty funny. I speak as a victim.
Kaylee lights up the room when she smiles. She is one those kids that you can’t be upset with, because she always makes you laugh. Kaylee is close to her father and his positive influence is clear. They both love hockey, and Kaylee is a particularly fond of ex Bruin Tyler Seguin.
Kaylee is attending college next year in NH and I am confident she will do well at the next level. Her ability to relate to people is a good foundation for success in many careers. Kaylee’s empathy, her ability to understand the needs and wants of a diverse group of people, will serve her well. I have had Kaylee in class and Advisory for 3 years and I will miss her next year. Kaylee Taylor is a Sunshine Girl: The future's so bright she’s gotta wear shades.

Senior Spotlight: Doug Quinn

Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

Douglas Quinn’s future is heading his way fast -- almost as fast as the cars he photographs. Doug and his brother have started Pure Focus Productions, a company based in Brentwood that offers videography and photography for clients who want to show off their top-end automobiles.
“There’s so much you can do with cars,” Doug says. “We shoot them in the studio, sometimes down at the beach, or any other spot people want. It’s really pretty exciting. It’s a great excuse to see a Lamborghini.”
Doug has been working toward this career for years. He was a student for two years in Sanborn’s Modern Media class, which produces video segments that run on the school’s in-house televisions and on YouTube. From there, Doug moved on to the Seacoast School of Technology, where he has been enrolled in the Digital Media Arts program. After graduation, he is considering enrolling in a similar program at Great Bay Community College.
Doug credits two teachers at Sanborn, Samuel Parsons and Lauren Petraitis, for helping him during his years here. “Mr. Parsons has gotten me through a lot,” he says. “He is my go-to person when I need help. And if it wasn’t for Ms. Petraitis I probably wouldn’t have graduated.”
Ms. Petraitis says: “Doug never hesitates to ask, ‘Ms. Petraitis, what do you think about....?’ during any given advisory day. The topics range from heavy and controversial to lighthearted in nature. He will often engage his peers in the same conversations, which often turns into a complex, multi-perspective collection of coexisting opinions. It's really lovely to watch Doug challenge others while also challenging himself, even when it is difficult.”
Mr. Parson also offers praise for Doug: “I finally got to know him after hearing so many great from students. This year Doug is in my Intro to TAC class where he’s been incredibly helpful with his peers, always willing to help someone when they don’t quite understand something. Doug has also been great in Super Smash Bros. Club. Every Monday he helps us get set up and is always willing to bring in extra controllers and systems so more kids can play. I’m going to miss Doug when he graduates, and can’t wait to see what he gets up to next year. Doug, make sure you take good care of my Gamecube!”

Here at Sanborn we all know Madilyn Wilson as “Maddy.” Everyone who knows Maddy will share similar positive things about her such as “Love that girl”, “She always does her work”, “Maddy is such a pleasure to have in class”. Mrs. Babcock added “Love Maddy! I don't have any classroom based info, just whenever we pass in the hallway she greets me with a smile and hello. From my brief interactions with her in PASS she was always doing her work. I wish the best for her!”
Maddy has been at Sanborn throughout her entire educational career.
She was a member of Drama and Chorus in grade 9.
When Maddy is not in school, she works part-time at Dano’s Pizza & Sub’s in Plaistow, NH where she takes orders, works the cash register, prepares subs and pizzas, and packages takeout food.
For fun, Maddy enjoys camping, playing video games, watching movies, and going out to eat with her friends and boyfriend. She also loves to travel to new places! Last summer she traveled to Virginia and this summer she has planned a trip to Ontario Canada. At home, Maddy likes spending time with her 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs.
Currently, Maddy in enrolled in an Internship learning Cosmetology at Elation Salon in Kingston, NH and is also working in a paid position at the Salon part-time. Maddy is learning all aspects of hair design. She would like to complete an apprenticeship at Elation Salon after graduation. Elation’s apprenticeship program follows a curriculum of at least 18 months and includes 3000 hours of training, testing and assisting a licensed cosmetologist. Upon completion of the program, students take the state board cosmetology test to become a certified cosmetologist.
With her strong work ethic, motivation, and friendly nature, Maddy will surely be a success in the field of Cosmetology! Good Luck Maddy!

I have had the pleasure of having Tracey in my English class her junior year and again this year for an ELO. Right off the bat last year, she demonstrated a strong work ethic. She is very organized and always follows through. She seeks help when needed but often works best independently. Last year she worked tirelessly on a heartfelt narrative piece that, this year, she decided to write a companion poem to. She is purposeful in her decisions and is constantly looking for ways to improve and better herself. When I think of Tracey, it’s her maturity that stands out above all else.
Other teachers say the same thing. Kathy Giovando and Mike Withe agree that Tracey is incredibly mature. They also identify her as hard-working, responsible, extremely intelligent, and motivated. Tracey is tenacious, outspoken, and always stands up for what is right. She is easy to talk to and has a great sense of humor.
Counseling Director, Heidi Leavitt, says, “Tracey is one of the most strong-willed students I have ever met. She sets goals for herself and she commits to meeting them no matter what it takes. Tracey is not afraid to ask for help. She knows that she is trying to balance more than the average teen and she recognizes that she needs the support of others to reach her goals and she is not afraid to ask for help when she needs it. Tracey inspires me every day with her commitment to both her education and her family.”
Amanda Feeney, writes, “I met Tracey when she first moved here her freshman year and have had the opportunity to watch her grow throughout her high school journey. Tracey is smart, insightful, genuine and determined. I love how she is always self-reflecting and constantly setting new goals for herself, and what I love even more is that I have watched her meet them time and again. I hope that as she is finishing up her time here at Sanborn, Tracey is taking time to celebrate all that she has achieved, she should be proud of herself- I know that I am! I am so excited to see what is next for her.”
Tracey is looking forward to attending Great Bay in the fall to become a veterinary technician. She loves animals, is eager to further her education, and she knows achieving this goal will set her up for success. We wish her the best of luck!

SRHS Announces Plans For Final Days of School For Grades 9-11
|
|
Dear Parents/Guardians of Sanborn Regional High School Grade 9-11 Students,
In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last two days of school, June 12 and 13. On these days, we will run 90 minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.
FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, teachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery. Students who will not pass a course will have the opportunity to meet with their guidance counselor to complete a credit check, re-evaluate their course selections for the 2019-20 school year and to initiate the process for credit recovery.
Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency or who have not finished any required work in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer. If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.
Students who are passing all of their competencies and who have completed all required work for their classes will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10 PM. Please also note that the last regular day of school for grades 9-11 will be Tuesday, June 11.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Tuesday, June 11 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any or all of the extended FLT sessions. For questions about your child’s grades, please contact your child’s teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.
The schedule for the days at the end of the year will be as follows:
|
|
Technology Device Collection
All students will be permitted to take their school-issued technology devices (chromebooks/laptops) home for the summer. These devices have been checked out by students through our school library system. Before the end of the year, all students will need to renew the check-out of their device with the school library. If students do not complete this task before the last day of school then the school will assume that the device has been lost or damaged and will pursue payment of the replacement cost for the device.
Please contact the office at (603) 642-3341 if you have any questions about this plan.

If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the “probationary” graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation.
