Portrait of a FAR Scholarship Student: Silva Karapetyan
Silva Karapetyan, 24, earned her bachelor's degree in design from the Armenian National University of Architecture and Construction in 2018. Her studies were made possible through FAR's Jerair Nishanian Scholarship Program. "Jerair Nishanian is a unique person in my heart and in my memory. I won't ever forget him," said Silva. "My university life began thanks to Jerair Nishanian's generous support." In 2017, Silva landed her first job as interior architect and designer at Unicus NTS. A few months later, Silva, who was searching for a higher salary, decided to also plunge herself into graphic design and marketing. Since March 2018, she has been working as a constructor-designer at GAT cutting, which is specialized in internal graphic design, construction and installation, large format printing, laser and fraser cuts, and 3D engraving.

Holy Week and Easter Sunday
This year Holy Week was fully celebrated at St. Mary through many moving and special services, which commemorated the dramatic events leading to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
On April 18, Great and Holy Thursday, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the evening, then the "Washing of the Feet" ceremony was held, which re-enacts Christ's humble service to his 12 disciples during the Last Supper. Der Hovsep celebrated "Gark Vodnlvai" with the children at the altar St. Mary Church. It was followed by a brief reception hosted by Jermen Hallajian in memory of her Parents, and the moving service of the Betrayal and Passion of our Lord (Khavaroom).
The Order of the Crucifixion of Christ and the Order of the Entombment of the Lord were held on Great and Holy Friday, April 19. Thank you to Asanet Hatchikoghlu for decorating Christ's tomb.
On Easter Eve, Saturday, April 20, the Badarak was preceded by Vespers and the Scriptural readings. Der Hovsep celebrated the Divine Liturgy with the beautiful lilies donated by our many generous parishioners who decorated the sanctuary, followed by the traditional Home Blessing in the Church Hall, and a hospitality table hosted by the Parish Council.
Easter Sunday, the Feast of Glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ was on April 21. It began with a Morning Service and Badarak celebrated by Fr. Hovsep, and attended by hundreds of people. The blessing of the four corners of the world, Antasdan service took place at the conclusion of the Badarak. It was followed by lunch and egg-cracking games in the Church Hall with a beautiful reception table hosted by the St. Mary Shnorhali School.
We thank everyone who contributed to the Easter Lilies and Yughakin Donations.

Pontifical Easter Celebration in Armenia
In Armenia, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Easter Sunday at the St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan. With the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin undergoing a major restoration, the grand Easter liturgy was held in the mammoth sanctuary His Holiness consecrated in 2001.
In his homily, Catholicos Karekin II recalled the words of promise and joy uttered by Jesus Christ: "I am the Resurrection and the Life. The one who believes in me, even though he dies, will live" (Jn 11:25).
Present for the occasion were Armenia's President Armen Sarkissian, its Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and dignitaries and faithful from throughout the country and diaspora.

Christ's Resurrection Celebrated at St. Vartan Cathedral
The Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan, Primate of the Eastern Diocese, celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Easter Sunday, April 21. A large crowd came to New York's St. Vartan Cathedral to share the occasion-the Primate's first Easter liturgy since assuming that office nearly a year ago.
In his sermon, Fr. Findikyan urged listeners to meet the risen Christ in every activity and place of their daily lives. "Today really is the heart of what it means to truly be an Armenian Christian. Our church fathers refer to Easter as 'The First Day,' the 'Beginning of New Life.' It's a reality that has been driving the Armenian people for two thousand years-ever since Saints Thaddeus and Bartholomew preached in our homeland," he said.
"And what they preached was that God lives! That Jesus Christ the Son of God is raised from the dead!"

A reception and program followed in Haik and Alice Kavookjian Auditorium, where the Primate led a home-blessing service.
Again this year, Easter Sunday at St. Vartan Cathedral was broadcast live over the Internet.

"Destroy This Temple, and I Will Raise It Again..."
In a week that included Good Friday as well as the Feast of the Genocide Martyrs, Armenians did not need any additional reminders of the cost of following Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, we-along with the rest of the world-received two such reminders: the inhuman massacre of Christians on Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka, and (days earlier) the partial destruction of a great work of Christian civilization in the burning of Notre Dame de Paris.
Expressions of sympathy, prayer, sorrow and regret-all are appropriate on such occasions, and we join faithful people everywhere in pleading for God's mercy.
But Armenian Christians, perhaps, may offer an additional perspective. For the fact is that we have witnessed our own great Christian monuments cast into ruin. We have mourned as vast numbers of our own faithful were targeted for extermination. Yet we still stand. Our faith was built to last-like the great cathedrals of Europe and Armenia; like the Architect of our faith himself, who was likewise destroyed, but rose again.
In an age that has proven dangerous and dispiriting for us all, this is a reality we Armenians can and must share with fellow Christians across the world, in their own times of trial.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word be-came flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'") And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
(John 1:1-17)
