WHAT ARE THE TYPES, LOCATIONS AND FREQUENCIES OF MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES IN SURFING ATHLETES?

Abstract
Introduction: Surfing is a sport that has seen rapid growth in popularity; however, there is little published research regarding surfing injuries.
Objectives: To examine the current literature for reports of surfing injuries including frequency of musculoskeletal injuries, incidence rate, location, and mode of injury. These data may be valuable for providers when determining treatment and prevention interventions.
Methods: Database search of PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and SPORTDiscus produced eight primary articles with evidence levels 2b-3b providing evidence of surfing injuries. Data were extracted for musculoskeletal injury frequency, overall injury incidence rate, injury location, and mode of injury. Means, standard deviations, and confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for each variable. Odds ratio was calculated for recreational versus competitive surfers and musculoskeletal versus non-musculoskeletal injuries.
Results: Sprain/strains (38%; 95% CI 0.35, 0.4) and dislocations/fractures (38%; 95% CI 0.36, 0.40) were the most common forms of musculoskeletal injuries. Odds ratio was 1.20 with (0.75, 1.92):recreational and competitive surfers were equally likely to encounter musculoskeletal injury. Lower extremity injuries (32%) were most common. The most common mechanisms of injury were body motion (37%) and surfboard impact (31%).
Conclusion: A significant portion of surfing injuries were musculoskeletal. Future research should focus on the separation of competitive and recreational surfer statistics to improve understanding of each population. Because of their expertise in musculoskeletal disorders, physical therapists may be an important resource for surfers in treating and preventing injuries.
Limitations include the use of surveys, variability with categorization of injuries, and an overwhelming proportion of study subjects being male.
Keywords: surfing; injury; prevalence; injury prevention
