Cornwall Library Newsletter May 2020
From the Library Director...
It’s been an exceptionally difficult time for everyone, but I hope this newsletter finds everyone safe and well!

The library takes our stewardship of tax funds seriously, and we are always striving to be fiscally responsible. To that end, we have worked hard to create a 2020-2021 budget that reflects the current economic climate. The proposed budget (found on our website ) does not exceed the tax cap. For a house with an assessed value of $350,000, Cornwall Public Library's taxes are estimated to be $218.00.

As an additional measure of fiscal responsibility, we will be combining our budget vote and trustee election with that of the Cornwall Central School District. Governor Cuomo has mandated the date of all School District and School District Library votes to be held on June 9, 2020. This vote will be held entirely through mail-in ballots. Ballots will be mailed by the school district to all qualified, registered school district voters. Ballots must be received by 5pm, June 9, 2020 via US mail in the provided return envelope to qualified, registered school district voters. For the library trustee election, there are four candidates running for three open seats: Tom Dames, Matt Rettig, Roberta Sherman, and Matt Soltis. 

We are currently waiting for guidelines from the state as to when and how we can re-open our building. As you may know, Governor Cuomo has proposed an opening plan entitled New York Moving Forward . Those of us located in the Mid-Hudson District are still waiting to hear when we can begin that process. But rest assured, the staff has been busy establishing plans and guidelines on how best to offer in-person services while keeping the public and employees safe.

Remember that even though you can’t physically enter the library, we are providing many digital services and virtual programs. If you need a reference question answered, email cor@rcls.org, or leave us a voice message. Join one of our book groups that are now online, or pop into one of our story times on Facebook. Make sure you subscribe to our monthly newsletter to keep up on all that is happening. I am look forward to returning to our physical library to interact with all of you. Here's to better days ahead!

Don't forget that Ancestry.com is available from home with your library card through the end of May. Take advantage of this award-winning resource!
Due to COVID 19, Newspaperarchive.com is making their database of historical newspapers free to libraries until June 15. This is a great resource for local historians and genealogists!

This database includes several historical local papers from Jeffersonville, Youngsville, Port Jervis, Middletown, Newburgh, Haverstraw, Nyack, White Plains, and Poughkeepsie.

Go to the library's history and genealogy database page and don't forget -- you'll need your library card to access this resource.

Webinar Series

Join us for a Facebook Live virtual presentation by Monica Cieslak, a Just Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables Nutrition Educator working with the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. Monica is a Culinary Institute of America trained chef, combining her passion for cooking with her love of educating folks on how to incorporate more fruits and veggies into their lives. The program will be held on the Cornwall Public Library’s Facebook page.

Library Letters

Attention all kids (2-12yrs) who love receiving “snail mail.”  Send the Cornwall Public Library an email with your name & postal address, along with some fun information – your favorite food…or color… or animal…or a question you have…or a joke you heard (you get the point).  Then be on the lookout in your snail mailbox for a reply.  Emails can be sent to  lfisher@rcls.org.  We would LOVE to hear from you!!
Catch our new in-house videos brought to you by our Children's staff. We have videos on a whole host of fun activities, including starting your own indoor garden to making sticky slime to learning more about nature! Go to the library's youtube channel and take a look! Don't forget to subscribe while you're there!

We have put together some wonderful resources for children and parents on our website. Try a new science experiment, deep dive into Harry Potter's world, doodle with Mo Willems, or hang out in a live eagle's nest. Simply click on the "Kid & Teens" tab to access all this and so much more.

The library now subscribes to hoopla - a video streaming service that provides access to hundreds of thousands of digital items for free with your Cornwall Library card! Visit www.hoopladigital.com to get started!

Things to know: Patrons have a 5 item monthly limit for materials borrowed through hoopla. However, if 5 titles are not enough, right now they have made extra items available that don't count toward your limit. To access these, look for items in the "Bonus Borrows" collection.

Musical Cornwall Series
We know that many of you are musically talented; we hear you as we walk around the town and village - guitar, piano, harp, bagpipes, clarinet, vocals, and more. Here is a chance to share that talent. Whether you are a beginner, or a professional, please post a video of yourself performing on your Instagram site. Use the hashtag: #cornwallpublibrary, to share it with us. New York Times Digital

Get 72 hours of free digital access to the New York Times with your library card. Outside the library, patrons can enter a code, register with an email, and enjoy 72 hours of full access from their computer or mobile devices. Once the 72 hours is up, just redeem the code again. Digital eBooks, Audiobooks and Magazines!

While many of us stay at home to "flatten the curve," don’t forget that the library offers many options for reading or listening to your favorite titles. The Libby App by Overdrive is one of the best options to access the more than 10,000 ebooks and audiobooks.

Libby is compatible with many devices including Kindle, iPad and iPhone, Nook, Chromebook, Kobo, Android and Windows and is available in your phone’s App Store.
