Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Good evening Palmetto Bay! Hope you had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful weather this weekend. Last week the Council had it's Committee of the Whole meeting where we discussed Village finances, Age Friendly Strategic Plan, Farmer's Market and the Community Survey. You can click here to view the meeting highlights.

On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, the Village of Palmetto Bay together with Kimley-Horn and Associates will be hosting a virtual public meeting at 7:00 p.m. This public meeting is being held to discuss the Safe Routes to School Program (“SRTS”), including the proposed sidewalk for Farmer Road (between SW 136th Street and Old Cutler Road). The consultant, Kimley-Horn and Associates will be making a presentation on the SFRTS program. This meeting will be conducted using a teleconferencing platform and broadcast live. Members of the public may watch the virtual meeting via the Village’s official Facebook page and/or streamed on: www.palmettobay-fl.gov. No official action shall be taken by the Village Council during this public meeting. Click here to learn how to listen in or participate.

Today, the Village Council made a visit to long time Palmetto Bay resident Dr. Marvin Dunn and his wife Andrea Loring. Dr. Dunn is a professor, author and has spent his life's work documenting the contributions of African Americans in South Florida's history. primary research interests are in the identification of effective instructional and behavioral strategies and programs for students at risk and in race relations. He founded the Academy for Community Education (later re-named Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education), a Miami-Dade County high school for at-risk youth. His views on racial and ethnic relations in the U.S. have been widely published and broadcast on the major news outlets. He has authored several books on the history of African Americans and has produced several films related to African American history in Florida. We thanked him for his contributions to the community and presented him with a proclamation. #PalmettoBaysGotTalent

This week we will have a Zoning Hearing on February 22nd, you can view that agenda here and learn how you can participate by clicking here. Our Committees and Taskforces are gearing back up to meet in February. To view all the public meetings that will be held (both virtual and in person), click here. Lastly, I know that the issue of bridging 87th avenue is on everyone's minds. On February 8th, Palmetto Bay heard from nearly 200 residents in the Village. I am glad that we were able to provide our residents, regardless of their position an opportunity to voice their opinions in a respectful manner. The comments that were shared, regardless of whether they were for or against the bridge, all stood together in their desire to find solutions that would maintain and improve the quality of life in the Village. I cannot, in good faith, support a project whose own proponents agree that it will only offer minor improvements and even those modest metrics may be overwhelmed by additional traffic drawn off of US 1 onto neighborhood streets. The Village’s position remains the same. We are not in favor of a bridge that will exacerbate, rather than improve, our already dire traffic conditions.  The Village Attorney has sent the following letter to request a date for conflict resolution with the County pursuant to State Statute.

As always, I am here to answer questions or lend a helping hand. I can also be reached at kcunningham@palmettobay-fl.gov or at 305-799-0695.

In Unity,
The Village of Palmetto Bay invites middle school students to be a part of the 2021 Earth Day Art Contest! The winning artwork will be displayed on the Parks & Recreation Department's Earth Day Webpage. This year's theme is based on the "emerging concept that rejects the idea that our only options to save the planet are to mitigate or adapt to the impacts of climate change and other environmental damage." To read more about this year's theme and the Earth Day Network, click here.
