Council opens Merrylands Community Service Centre

Cumberland City Council is excited to announce the opening of the Merrylands Community Service Centre. This is Cumberland City Council's way of servicing the local community and making ourselves accessible to local residents, particularly while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

It's great that we can offer an opportunity for the community to connect with Council and raise their issues.

I am regularly approached on a variety of issues from footpaths and parks to schools, transport, housing and other issues where residents would like Council's support.

Residents are encouraged to visit the new space (Shop 1/205 Merrylands Road, Merrylands) if they have any questions about Council projects or services or would like to raise issues where Council may be able to assist. The office is open 9am to 4pm or by appointment on (02) 8757 9412.
Free flu vaccine to protect Cumberland's homeless

Cumberland City Council, in partnership with the local health district, has had its first pop-up flu clinic at the Holroyd Centre in Merrylands on Thursday, 7 May. The clinic offers screening and vaccination for members of Cumberland's community who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness.

As we approach the cold and flu season, this initiative aims to further extend Council's support in a time when it is needed most by providing access to basic healthcare services. The clinic will be open to residents who are homeless, including those who are sleeping rough, or at risk of homelessness and those in temporary accommodation or overcrowded housing as well as those on temporary visas.

The clinic will maintain safety and social distancing government regulations.
Council offers online resources for families in quarantine

During COVID-19,  Cumberland City Council has introduced online initiatives to help keep families and children entertained as we continue to follow government guidance.

We know the lockdown has proven to be challenging for many families, so these new online resources are available on Council's website to help keep the family entertained. From story time and exercise to arts and crafts and competitions, there are a range of options for kids to enjoy as we stay safe at home.

As a community, we need to channel our creativity and resilience to stay positive, navigate our way through this pandemic and come out the other side.

Bringing a smile to those in need

Local Guildford resident Jasmine Issa is the founder of Project Generosity, a non-for-profit (NGO) organisation which aims to bring a smile to those going through a tough time.

The NGO was launched five years ago after Jasmine heard about the fatal illness of a 1-year-old boy, named Yanis, and the family's difficulties.

She pledged her time and dedication to receiving donations for a "comfort box" which was put together and delivered to the family.

Soon after the Yanis passed away.

"I still get goosebumps every time I think of this story," Jasmine says.

Project Generosity was established in remembrance of the small comfort Yanis's family were able to experience with a simple act of kindness.

Through the work of helpful volunteers and the community donors, Jasmine has been able to assist numerous people who are in need.

On behalf of Cumberland City Council, we thank our volunteers for being pillars of our community.

As part of National Volunteer Week in May, Council will be highlighting the extraordinary work of volunteers across the Cumberland City area.
Planning Notifications Now Advertised Online

Council's Development Control Plans include notification provisions of placing of advertisements in local newspapers for certain developments.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Auburn Review and the Parramatta Advertiser have cancelled printing newspapers.

Cumberland City Council is committed to continue the assessment of development applications during the pandemic.

Therefore, whilst local newspapers are not being printed, Council will discontinue including planning items in print newspaper advertisements and will notify applications on Council's website.

Council will also continue to send out letters of the proposed developments to affected property owners and residents.

Submissions on current development applications can be made by visiting our website To check the status of specific development visit our Tracker page .
