You (or someone you know) might be a great fit for the
Task Force on City Government Policies and Practices.
The City acknowledges that systemic racism exists throughout society, and the Task Force is dedicated to helping identify and eliminate that racism and the bias of white privilege throughout all departments in our local government. The first 18 months will focus on public safety/policing policies. A diverse group of 12 community members will work together, in partnership with the Police Department, to discuss areas for positive change and make recommendations to City Council. Emphasis is on people stepping forward who have not been involved with government before. Share and help get the word out!

There's a New Fire Chief in Town
|
|
“I’ve been able to succeed because I’ve surrounded myself with good people - really, really good people from the City, from Council members, to firefighters and paramedics," said Red Wing's new Fire Chief. Mike Warner showed much gratitude in his acceptance speech after officially being named Fire Chief of the City of Red Wing, but we feel just as grateful to have him. He has earned this position after nearly 20 years in the fire service and six months as Interim Fire Chief for the City.

Thankfully, the Council Chambers are officially open again for meetings, so come say hi and give your input to the City Council or members of your favorite board or commission. Just be aware, things are a bit different around here due to the pandemic - masks and social distancing are required.

Primary elections are right around the corner--August 11! Do you know who you're voting for?
With three candidates on the ballot for the Mayor's office, the August 11 primary will narrow the race to two candidates for Election Day on November 3. Absentee voting is available through August 10, and due to COVID-19 safety concerns, Red Wing residents are encouraged to
vote by mail this election season, but however you do it, get out and VOTE!

Red Wing Bans Conversion Therapy for Minors
|
|
City Council made it official Monday night to ban the practice of conversion therapy for minors by legal professionals in our city. Conversion therapy claims to cure or correct sexual orientation or gender identity, and is regarded by most medical organizations as ineffective and traumatic. There's no documented history of conversion therapy in Red Wing right now, but City Council members, with a recommendation from the Human Rights Commission, decided to vote and keep it that way. Nothing says summer like fresh produce, and now you can pick some up downtown during the week. The Red Wing Farmers Market, modified for safety, is back for the season. Every weekday, from 8 a.m. until sold out, vendors will be selling garden goodness along West 4th Street in front of City Hall. Our local farmers work hard to provide healthy food for our community; keep them healthy by wearing a mask and following social distancing guidelines when shopping.

Every year, the Minnesota City/County Management Association recognizes one city manager in the state for excellence in service. This year, this prestigious recognition in the form of the
Dr. Robert A. Barrett Award for Management Excellence
went to our very own Red Wing City Council Administrator, Kay Kuhlmann. Kay has been overseeing the operation of our city for 23 years and even if this is the first time you’ve heard her name, the City of Red Wing couldn’t function without her. "It's an honor," Kay said of receiving the award. She adds that it feels "a little strange to receive an award just for doing your job." It's a job not just anyone could do, and we are proud and thankful to have her with the City of Red Wing. Congratulations, Kay, on an award very well deserved.
