8th Grade Service Project

"Academic excellence, respect and a passion to serve
are the inspiration for our community."

Earlier this week, our 8th graders (many sporting sweatshirts from the high school they will be attending in the fall) put that part of our mission statement into action. Led by Mrs. Michele Craig, Christ Church's Director of Youth Ministries, students stuffed packets o f food for insecure families in Montgomery County. Thank you Mrs. Craig, and thank you 8th graders!

A Message from the Head of School:

Dear CES Families,

I hope you have noticed the noticed the announcements regarding the golf tournament on May 7 at the Blue Mash Golf Course. This is our final, big fundraising community event for the 2018-2019 school year. Proceeds from this event help support our tuition assistance program which in turn helps to keep the CES focus on having a racially, ethnically and economically diverse student body.

As in years past, this event is largely support by Steve Ward (CES class of '80) and his business, Rockville Fuel and Feed. He rallies his business associates who come and have a fun day of golf with each other while also supporting our school. It is a pretty impressive thing to see. CES is lucky to have such a generous and loyal alum, and I would love to see current CES families demonstrate a similar level of commitment to the success of the school.

If you haven't already, there is still time to register either as an individual player or to bring a foursome. A new event for this year is the Pitch 'n Putt clinic for children and their parents. It is being offered by Blue Mash's PGA profession, Kent Keith ( https://swingtheclub.com/ ). The clinic starts at 4:00. Mr. Keith can accommodate up to 12 golfers. The cost is $40 for two golfers. One parent is required to participate with their child or children.

If you are not available to play on May 7 and cannot make it to the clinic, please consider participating by sponsorship. You can sponsor on behalf of your business or in honor of your child's class. Maybe you rally your child's class and have everyone chip in some money to purchase a sponsorship for the whole class. It would be wonderful to see a sign that represents every single class... preschool 2's through 8th grade.

If you haven't helped support CES through one of our other fundraising opportunities this year, here is another chance.

Hoping to see you on the course!!

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed. D.

The ERB's are Coming Up
for 3rd & 4th Grade
April 29th- May 2nd

Next week the 3rd and 4th grades will be taking the ERB's (the CTP Online Test ). The Comprehensive Testing Program is a standardized test CES uses in grades 2-8 to collect basic information about student achievement in key areas: listening, reading, vocabulary, writing, and mathematics. The 3rd and 4th grade will be taking a total of 8 subtests over a 4 day period of time (April 29th- May 2nd).

While we approach these tests in a low-key manner, we do ask families to be sure their child is well rested, has had a nutritious breakfast and is relaxed and ready to go on the mornings of the testing.  It is your child's schooling to date that prepares them for this testing so there is no studying that needs to be done.

Please contact Trina Gandal in the Learning Resource Center 301-424-6550 or email her at tgandal@cesrockville.org  if you have any questions.

Wells T. ('20) traveled to Cuba the week before Easter. His week-long tour included baseball games in the public housing projects of Alamar; at Palmar de Junco, the Americas' oldest baseball stadium located in Matanzas; and at Havana's Plaza de la Revolución. At each stop, he was truly blessed to meet, converse with, and befriend his counterpart Cuban peloteros.

The trip also included daily conversations with his family's wonderful hosts, Rayma y Dorado; desayunos with fresh papaya, mamey sapote, and homemade pineapple jam; visiting the Vedado neighborhood's ration store and market to learn about Cubans' daily life; experiencing the neighborhood-scale mosaic arts district of Fusterlandia; exercising at an outdoor boxing gym with other young athletes; climbing the bell tower of Havana's Catedral de San Cristobal; dining late on delicious Cuban cuisine; and riding frequently along the Malecón.

The most enduring memory, though: witnessing first-hand the constant warmth, generous spirit, and unfailing grace of the Cuban people.
