House Appropriations Act Includes Funding for TICK ACT
Two major health bills authored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) were attached to an end-of-year, must-pass spending package today and will become law by the end of the week.
The first bill-
the TICK Act-creates a "new whole-of-government national strategy to combat Lyme" and other tick borne diseases. It authorizes $150 million in federal funding for Centers of Excellence and important Lyme initiatives at the local level.
The MVCAC has joined the Vector-Borne Disease Network (VBDN). More information can be found on their website or by talking with Jennifer Henke. The VBDN met on 12/3/19, and the minutes of that meeting will be posted soon. A few items of interest are:
CDC announced a new funding initiative on novel intervention methods for tick and mosquito-borne diseases. The closing date is January 7. More information may be found online here.
In early 2020 NACCHO and CDC will collaborate to administer the second nationwide assessment of local vector control organizations in the US. This updates the 2016 assessment from the same partners. The 2020 assessment will gauge how vector program capacity has changed nationwide in the four years since the initial assessment. It will also expand on the 2016 assessment by collecting baseline data on tick surveillance and control capabilities.
The American Public Health Association is reviewing their policy statement entitled "Maximizing Public Health Protection with Integrated Vector Management". APHA is seeking comments on the statement. In brief, they are wondering if mere updates are needed or if a complete overhaul is required. If interested, please review and provide comments by mid-January to Jennifer at [email protected].
