Day 27: A "Masala" of World Music with a touch of Bollywood

 Destination:  World Music Day!

Map WorldMusicDay
Fun Facts:  It's another relaxing Sunday. Since we visited India twice this week, it seemed only fitting that we would feature Indian music for our Sunday World Music Day.

"A musical masala" are the descriptive words from Putumayo for both of the CDs.  So settle in, read a bit about traditional and contemporary Indian music and then enjoy a visual visit to India including some fascinating salt flats in the video.

"India" -    A captivating musical masala featuring mesmerizing vocals and gentle beats.

PWM IndiaCD

Putumayo World Music presents  India , a collection showcasing India's rich musical variety from traditional and acoustic music to Bollywood and electronica.

India's thriving popular music scene along with the country's immense Bollywood film industry are highlighted on this collection. The love ballad "Tere Bina," from the 2007 blockbuster "Guru", was written by acclaimed film composer and Oscar winner A.R. Rahman.

Rahman took home the awards for Best Score and Best Original Song for his work on Best Picture "Slumdog Millionaire". "Tere Bina" also features Chinmayee, the award-winning female playback singer. (A Playback singer is an artist who records the songs that actors lip-synch) Rajeshwari Sachdev's "Maavan Te Tiyan," is another hit Bollywood song from the film "The Perfect Husband."

"Indian Groove" Traditional Indian flavors meet electronica on this fascinating musical masala!

On this collection, Putumayo explores the panorama of contemporary Indian music featuring Indian pop and film stars, second generation South Asians living in London and Montreal, European and Caribbean fusionists, and yoga instructors/musicians from California.
RaviShankar1967

The world has been fascinated with Indian music ever since Ravi Shankar played his sitar for a blissed-out flower power crowd at the seminal Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

While that event introduced many in the West to the beauty and complex riches of Indian classical music, the popular music of the subcontinent had long been familiar to viewers of Bollywood films.

These days, the sounds of India are instantly recognizable and increasingly influential. Instruments like the sitar and Bollywood song samples have appeared in everything from Shania Twain country albums to Jay-Z hip hop hits.

Come take a trip to India. Close your eyes and listen to the music line and the rhythyms. Open your eyes and watch the interesting staging of the video. (And whether or not you love Indian and Bollywood music videos, this one is a must to see her earrings!)
