INGRAM GALLERY | Winter 2021
Greetings!

Creativity flows as we examine the art and achievements of both past and present artists. Our shared art history continually recalls us to the activities and timelessness of visionaries such as Rachel Berman (1946-2014), Jack Beder (1910-1987), Florence Vale (1909-2003), and Brian Burke, R.C.A. (1952-2017).

The current moment is likewise active in the worlds of the artists creating outstanding works in studio. This issue of Ingram Art News will look into the endeavours and recent developments of Jonathan Castellino, John Doyle, Barry Hodgson, Yann Leroux, Jessica Levman and more. Please read on for further details regarding the present moment as well as for the gallery’s announcement of special guest artist Serina Timperio.

SERINA TIMPERIO Cuckoo for Keukenhof oil on canvas, 58.5 x 71.25 inches

SERINA TIMPERIO

Ingram Gallery is pleased to welcome Serina Timperio as a guest artist through the artistic community as well as for her exemplary artistic achievements.

Born in Windsor, Ontario, Timperio earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Queen’s University in 2018 where she was the recipient of the André Biéler and Kathleen L. Healey prizes. Her breathtaking oils and laser etchings touch upon the human condition with raw and potent immediacy as her work examines the boundaries between the arts and sciences, body and mind, and the processes of recovery and resilience that exist therein. With a focus on integrated approaches to cancer care, Timperio has discussed the benefits of art toward the healing process at the Canadian Undergraduate Conference on Healthcare in Ontario. Her work ultimately explores the human enterprise in broad form and ushers the viewer through the gravity of our existence with an underlying playfulness that is uniquely Timperio's.

The artist’s Voyage series boldly studies the evolution of architecture through a surreal and neon lens. Strident iterations of the botanical and the symbolic figure of the goat repeatedly appear, gesturing toward humanity on a whole and its intrinsic relationships with freedom, vitality, energy, and independence.

Timperio's Archival Exploration works span across media to unify form and content. With an exacting combination of printmaking, photography, and 3D topographical mapping, the laser etchings of personal photographs are spread across three-dimensional representations of the folds in the brain, drawing attention to the capacity of experimentation in both medicine and the humanities.

Serina is an ambassador and advocate for the research of neurosurgeon Dr. D.J. Cook (Kingston Health Sciences Centre) as well as the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. Please stay tuned to Ingram Art News for an upcoming special exhibition announcement. You can view a preview of Timperio’s works here and please contact the gallery for the artist’s catalogue.

JONATHAN CASTELLINO still.point archival print, edition of 3, 30 x 45 inches

New photographic works by artist Jonathan Castellino are soon to arrive at the gallery that continue his dazzling approach to the medium. With outstanding significance, Castellino repeatedly questions our viewpoints with attentive and painterly inquests into our environments.

RACHEL BERMAN (1946-2014) The Painted Bird (Toronto, 2003) oil on paper, 43.5 x 40.75 inches

John Doyle has been producing majestic works in the realms of his captivating and bucolic working environments. From forest to Georgian Bay, Doyle continues to advance how we see the natural world that surrounds us.

Barry Hodgson has been fruitfully maximizing quiet moments, creating fresh pieces with his esteemed and intrepid brush. Focusing attention on his immediate environment, Hodgson has been producing astonishing works from secluded hiking trips to Old Woman's River as well as in the graceful respite of his own garden.

YANN LEROUX Yasmine oil on paper on canvas, 20 x 16 inches

The oils of Yann Leroux have been drawing a great deal of attention of late and the artist has been busy producing new works. Leroux's witty and visionary charm is illuminated by the artist’s mixture of the surreal and the authentic within the compassionate depictions of his subjects.

Jessica Levman has been busy generating fresh and markedly insightful pieces. The fluidity of Levman's accomplished figurative work finds itself absorbed in the tactile quality of responsive movement. In the artist’s newest pieces we see dimension reshaped in mixed forms of media that intermingle in somatic amity.

BRIAN BURKE, RCA (1952-2017) Swan Song (2007) oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches

FROM ALL OF US | AT INGRAM
Artists from Canada’s illustrious past are at the top of mind for many as of late as recurring discussions with collectors surround the artworks of Jack Beder (1910-1987), Brian Burke, R.C.A. (1952-2017), E.B. Cox, R.C.A. (1914-2003), Rachel Berman (1946-2014), and Florence Vale (1909-2003).

The lush works of Jack Beder (1910-1987) occupy the thoughts and appreciation of art lovers around the world. From his architectural interest in his city of Montreal to the artist’s grand views of our natural world, Beder’s vision is simultaneously impassioned and eloquent.

"Jack Beder was, and arguably still is, an artist's artist."
- Henry Lehmann

Brian Burke, R.C.A. is one of Canada's most cherished figurative painters. The artist's barefaced and farcical approach to the canvas presents ageless views of the social and political forces that attach themselves to our society. Always considered and multifaceted, Burke’s oils testify to the power of art to challenge society at its crux while also celebrating the wonder of life where it appears.
