Stepping Out and Stepping Up

in Mid-Market

Every week more people are out walking, biking, and taking transit along Market Street. We’ve recently seen the last of the large barricades come down from construction projects between 5th and 7th. As of November, Yotel hotel began accepting reservations. The LINE hotel down the street is not too far from completion either. For the first time since 2020, ACT Strand, Orpheum, Golden Gate, and the Warfield theaters are running shows in front of live audiences. On Monday, Mayor Breed and new City Attorney David Chiu announced the SF Live Initiative with $2.5M in grants to support entertainment venues and outdoor live performances. Recently, two apparel retailers Bait and Fiscostocks have opened doors between 6th and 7th.

While we are still a ways away from the next normal, the future of our downtown corridor is going to be all about what makes people want to step out and step up to support local businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs. For this email, we’re focused on some things you can do right now.

This program is made possible with $8.8M in funding

support from the Mayor, over two years, and requires

at least $3M more from the private sector over that time.

Urban Alchemy Definitions of Service Engagements and Interventions

Positive Engagements

1-3 minute engagements to build positive relationships and serve as community connector. Practitioners provide visitors, residents, and neighbors directions, district information, service connections and resource information.

Inviting Space, Social Norm Interventions

Intervention with a neighbor or resident to invite them to participate in creating a safe and inviting public space for all by maintaining a path clear of debris. Practitioners make a good faith effort to interrupt anti-social behavior including but not limited to public urination/defecation, littering, and general noise disturbances.

De-Escalation Interventions

Practitioners assist with relational and other interventions to help contain mental health episodes, and to prevent or interrupt street violence. Solutions may include referring to appropriate service personnel like EMTs, HOT, or, lastly, the police.
