KICKING IT INTO HIGH GEAR
Fall is Here!
Hello College Access Champions,

Fall is finally here! We're in the full swing of things here at DCAN as the academic year picks up and we are excited to see how this year unfolds.

We know you are all working hard and we recognize the unique challenge right now as the pandemic continues. DCAN wants to let you know we see you and recognize that many of you are going above and beyond for Detroit students and families. It does not go unnoticed.

Thank you all for your help in transitioning over to a new newsletter format. Starting in November, the first week of each month will include a longer newsletter full of information, events, and resources. We will provide weekly, monthly, and quarterly updates based on your preferences provided when you subscribed.

We are happy you are here!

Best,

The DCAN Team

CHAMPION'S ROSTER UPDATES
Update Your School and Organization Info
ATTENTION DETROIT SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORTING STUDENTS AGES 11-24

Please take a few minutes to update your contact information to ensure we have the most up to date information for your school or organization this academic year. We are changing a number of our communications this year and updating your contact information will guarantee you receive all relevant updates, resources and opportunities.
UNDERSTANDING SUPPORT FOR DISPLACED AND HOMELESS YOUTH
There are more students than we realize that qualify for resources and independent status for financial aid due to their living situations. It is sometimes unclear on how to identify these students due to the varying statuses of student circumstances. We have used "homeless" and "foster youth" terminology as the classification of this bucket which many students and families do not identify with given their circumstances when they may in fact still quality for resources.

With the support of Detroit Promise, Park West Foundation, and Detroit Public School Community District, we have created a flowchart that can be shared with staff and personnel on how to identify students. Though addressed to the student, anyone can use this tool. You can also include your school/district/county representative or department contact information on the document.
ANNOUNCING THE RE-OPENING
OF DETROIT'S HBCU
"THE LEWIS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS"
D'Wayne Edwards, a sneaker designer and educator, is in the works to reopen the Lewis College of Business in Detroit in a move that could make it Michigan's only operating HBCU, or Historically Black College or University.

Enrollment is expected to start in December, though no further details could be provided yet.
