Below are some highlights of our work in the past few months and some upcoming events. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Butte County 4-H Brings Back the Horse Show
In July, Butte County 4-H held a 4-H Horse Show for the first time in a decade. The event was open to 4-H members from the surrounding area and had nearly 40 entrants. The Show was hailed a success by volunteers, staff, and attendees. A special thanks is owed to Wheeler Ranch & Feed of Biggs, CA for hosting the event.
Master Gardeners turning school gardens into outdoor science labs
Master Gardener volunteers are piloting the ‘Living Lab’ program in primary grades at Little Chico Creek and Citrus Elementary Schools in Chico. Volunteers provide professional development training for educators that focuses on using the garden to teach next generation science standards. The training will be available to other schools in spring 2022.

Dairy program working to improve milk quality
Betsy Karle, Dairy Advisor, is collaborating with CSU Chico, UC Davis, and Cornell University in a project to study the effects of best management practices on the farm that seek to improve raw milk quality and extend shelf life of organic dairy products at the retailer.

Growing the Valley podcast
Orchard Systems Advisor Luke Milliron produces a weekly podcast covering many aspects of orchard management and the latest research information. Don't miss the "one minute challenge" describing orchard tasks for October.

Livestock Disaster Pass Program for Butte County
Livestock Advisor Tracy Schohr, in collaboration with several County Agencies, established a program to provide access to commercial livestock operators within evacuation zones during natural disasters.

We are hiring!
UCCE is hiring three advisors to lead programs in Butte County: Integrated Pest Management, Forestry and Natural Resources, and Orchard Systems. These programs will augment the offerings of UCCE in Butte County.
