Share your ideas on breakthrough PPE waste reduction ideas
|
The Coalition is currently conducting a national project related to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical single use products (mSUPs) in health care.
We are exploring and identifying reuse and reduction opportunities for PPE and selected mSUPs, and we want to hear what ideas you have for PPE.
We want to build a 'WILD CARD' scenario together about the circumstances that would be essential for a “breakthrough achievement” to reduce medical plastic waste in health care.
The wilder your idea the better! Ideas DO NOT have to be feasible, affordable, or practical. However, they must include consideration of these four circumstances:
1) made in Canada
2) zero waste
3) net zero carbon emissions and non-toxic
4) meet or exceed all current safety, quality and comfort standards for PPE.

Vancouver Coastal Health to present at Targeting Hard to Recover Waste in Healthcare
While many large institutions are making real progress toward zero waste goals, hospitals and other medical facilities have struggled to keep pace. Health care generates an enormous amount of waste, much of it long considered unavoidable and unrecoverable. That’s starting to change as more sustainability initiatives are finding viable options to capture blue wrap and other plastic packaging from ORs, clinics and labs. More importantly, some leading institutions are finding circular economy solutions to eliminate unnecessary single-use items. This program will feature case studies of efforts being made by several health care institutions followed by an extended panel discussion.

Canadian Woman becomes first person diagnosed as suffering from 'climate change'
The Hill
A Canadian woman could be the first patient to be diagnosed as suffering from “climate change” after doctors said heatwaves and poor air quality brought on acute breathing problems.
Kyle Merritt, an emergency room doctor in Nelson, British Columbia who was responsible for the diagnosis, told Glacier Media that it was the first time in a decade he had determined a patient’s cause of suffering to be climate change.
“If we’re not looking at the underlying cause, and we’re just treating the symptoms, we’re just gonna keep falling further and further behind,” he said.

Swap your inhaler, skip the laughing gas: How patients can help curb health care emissions
CBC News
If you're struggling to breathe or heading into surgery, concerns about climate change are likely not top-of-mind compared to worries about managing your own health.
But rather ironically, the health care sector contributes to climate change by giving off a sizeable chunk of greenhouse gases — and medical experts say both health care providers and patients can do more to curb those emissions.
