May 31  Online Service:   The Deepest Thing Inside ( 10:30 am)
Rev. Marcus Hartlief
One of the YouTube hits of the pandemic has been Some Good News, a silly, heartwarming weekly show to highlight all the kindness happening right now that doesn't make it into the headlines. The poet Naomi Shihab Nye writes that "before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside, you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing." In a service a few weeks ago, we talked about a story from the Talmud that mentioned the "rewards of suffering." What does our capacity for kindness have to do with the hardship we have faced?

Sunday Circle and New Saturday Circle
Sunday Circle - 9:00 am
Since Social Distancing means we can't gather in our Fireside Room, we have evolved a Zooming Circle.  See connection information below.

As we all adapt to current events we have departed from our previous schedule of topics and leaders and re-purposed our group to simply be a place where, each week, we can
Connect in Community
Share Humor and Hope
Support Creativity and Curiosity

A volunteer leader welcomes participants, lights a chalice, and offers a reading and topic for the day, often one that has evolved from the previous week's conversation.  We will have a few minutes of silence for contemplation, and then take turns responding with thoughts or asking related questions.  We also make time for shared joys and concerns.

Saturday Circle NEW!
UUCM's Sunday Circle has become so popular that we are starting a Saturday Circle at 9:00 am as well. Chalice lighting, interesting conversations, Joys and Concerns, and a bit of silent contemplation all make for a meaningful social experience. Our first topic this week is "Who are your influencers?" Do you have a guru, favorite poet, or role model in your life? Let's share!

Join us every Saturday via Zoom at  https://zoom.us/j/738308019

Or call in by phone:  1-669-900-6833, then enter Meeting ID: 738 308 019

Update from Long-Range Planning/COVID-19 Response Committee
Dear UUCM Community,

Thank you so much for all of your feedback to the Long-Range Planning Committee, which has now temporarily assumed the task of the COVID-19 Response Committee.  You have likely seen our survey requests, guidance from the UUA, and now news that California is moving to allow churches to begin the process of reopening.  We would like to share a little bit with you about what we learned from you and others, and what the process will be for UUCM.

First, many thanks to Wendy Meluch for facilitating a survey of our members and friends about how online church may or may not be meeting your needs.  We received 75 responses to the survey, and some additional emails with questions and suggestions.  It is clear from those results that many of you appreciate the online and phone connections that we have been making available while our building is closed, and there were many good ideas about what additional offering or changes might make the experience even better.  We have heard you, and expect to see some of these suggestions implemented in the near future.  You can hear more details at our June 7 Annual Meeting.

Some of you have expressed the desire for us to resume in-person gathering as soon as possible.  Others expressed concern that we might consider reopening the church before it is safe to do so.  Please be assured that we will not resume any activities at our building that we believe will create unnecessary risks to the health of our members or staff.  Although the State has issued some guidance on reopening places of religious worship, UUCM is not going to move to resume in-person worship in the next few weeks.

We are still waiting for guidance from the County of Marin Department of Public Health about what specific requirements might be.  But given the existing guidance from the UUA, CDC, and State of California, it seems clear that:
  • The building will remain closed until we receive and analyze specific guidance from the County.
  • We will open gradually, making meeting space available to small groups before larger gatherings.
    • We will encourage groups to meet outdoors, if possible.
  • In-person worship services will be one of the last activities to resume in our building.
Even when we do resume, it seems that the worship experience will need to change dramatically from what we were used to in the past.  For example, we would need to increase physical distance, wear masks, eliminate singing, stop sharing food and drink, and limit the number of people in the building to 25% of our capacity.

In addition to the concerns about how the worship experience might change, we must also consider what supplies, volunteers, and additional work by our cleaning service might be necessary in order to keep our building clean and safe for all of those who come in person.  This might mean additional expenses for staff time and supplies, and it might also mean that we are limited by the availability of necessary supplies (e.g., face masks or sanitizing wipes).  For all of these reasons, the Committee is recommending that we take a slow approach to resuming activities in our building.

The building will remain closed until we have specific guidance from the County.  As this situation is changing, we will keep you all updated on developments.  As always, we appreciate your feedback and questions at any time, but especially at our June 7 Annual Meeting.
From the Minister

Dear Ones,

When shelter in place began, I had high hopes that we would be able to gather in person for Flower Communion. Our annual ritual of sharing flowers is a cornerstone of religious practice for me, one of the few rituals unique and indigenous to Unitarian Universalism, a ritual that I've found moving and meaningful every year of my life.

For a while I imagined we might hold off on Flower Communion instead of holding it on June 14th. Waiting for that moment just around the corner when we could worship all together again. While a great deal of uncertainty remains about when we will be able to resume in-person worship services, it is sadly clear that it will not be just around the corner. While we wait for guidance from Marin County Public Health, we assume that even when we can gather again, we will do so under very different conditions than when we were last together in March. This is sad, and very hard, and I know our online alternative is woefully inferior to being together in the flesh.

But I hope you will still help me to make Flower Communion a sacred ritual, a remembrance of the power and strength of community. Here's my request:  Send me a picture of a favorite flower, perhaps from your garden or neighborhood, with a short note about the flower - include its name and location - and a word or two about how you see the gifts you bring to community reflected in its beauty. Please send to r evmarcus@uumarin.org by June 8th for use in our service on June 14th.

With you on the journey,

Rev. Marcus Hartlief

This Week in Religious Exploration

This Sunday is Pentecost, a holiday that comes from the Christian tradition.  The story behind the holiday is of a group of Jesus' followers who gathered to observe Shavuot heard a rush of wind and flashes of fire. But the interesting part was those gathered were able to understand each other no matter what language they spoke. Christians see this as a miracle.

So what can we glean from Pentecost? The third Unitarian Universalist principle is about the acceptance of one another and spiritual growth. We care about understanding every person; no matter what language they speak. We do not want language barriers to stop us from bonding with others and sharing our love and care for our world. We could say the real miracle was all these people were talking about what they believe, each in a different language, but everyone who is listening hears them in their own language, and they all understood one another. The miracle is the understanding.

Calling All Hobbyists, Artists & Crafters!

What will the next year of FUNdRAISING look like for us? It seems clear that in the next fiscal year we will need to supplement anticipated income with activities to raise money. How they will develop and how they will look will take some imagination and creativity.

The Fundraising/Celebrating Team is thinking about an Art and Craft Fair as a FUNdRAISER for some time in November (or a date to be determined when we can fit all the moving parts into place). It might be in person. It might be online. It might be both. It might be in some other format. W e need to be planning now so that we can be ready.

If you are interested in painting, glass blowing, metal work, jewelry, weaving, beading, pottery, quilting, bookmaking, gardening, or another creative art, please let us know. We need your thoughts and ideas.

Are you interested in raising money? Please join the committee. Plans are in the beginning stages and your input is invaluable.

Come plan with us. You can give Joan a call at 518-588-0822 or drop her a line at joanesq93@gmail.com

More Rationale for 2020 Bylaws Amendments

The last time our UUCM Bylaws were amended was June 5, 2016. Since then we have had a minister resign, an interim minister with us and now a Developmental Minister for almost two years. In the Spring of 2019, at the request of the Leadership Council, we began working to establish better clarity about responsibilities and accountability at UUCM. The Leadership Council also wanted a clearer path to getting solutions and/or answers to questions. To do so, the Board appointed the Task Force on Organizational Structure. Members include Janice Prochaska, Chair, Linda Haumann, Anne Spatola, Bev Munyon, Reverend Marcus, and Ted Gaebler. We have been reporting back to the Leadership Council, the Board, the Finance Committee, and Administrative staff as we proceeded.

Several copies of the book, Governance and Ministry, were purchased for members of the Task Force and the congregation. Based on reading Governance and Ministry: Rethinking Board Leadership, by Dan Hotchkiss, a UU Minister, we learned how governance and ministry functions and responsibilities can be separate yet connected by our Mission. This guided our recommendation of the following changes to our Congregational Bylaws:

* The usage of "governance and ministry" for the responsibilities of the Board and Minister.

 Board governance responsibilities include: giving oversite, planning for the future, setting goals, evaluating, ensuring staying on Mission, holding leaders accountable, effectively delegating.

 Ministry responsibilities include managing the day to day operation of the ministry activities of the congregation. This division enables the Board to be freed up from daily operations.so that the Board can do strategic leadership and gives Ministry Teams the ability to get quick responses to questions for example, on space usage, a budget need, or who can use what supplies.

* Differentiating Bylaws Committees and Ministry Teams. Bylaws Committees help the Board govern and have agendas, minutes, reports, presentations. They work with paper. Ministry teams are more fluid and informal and not restricted on who can be on the team. Teams are the doers of ministry for the Congregation for example, Pastoral Care, Sound Engineering, Hospitality, Crafting for a Cause, Fundraising.

* The UUA also recommended that Committee's specific responsibilities be detailed in a separate Board Policy Book (currently being developed). This provides greater flexibility to adding tasks or amending tasks without having to formally amend the Bylaws. At Thomas Ervin's suggestion, we are adding a summary to each Standing Committee so as not to remove all language.

* The addition of voting via videoconference for circumstances when we may not be able to meet in person due to government regulations. There will also be flexibility to allow participation by some via Zoom even if an in-person meeting is happening.

* The updating of the Endowment Committee responsibilities with the recognition that the UUA provides the investment management of most of our funds.

* Clearly designating the nominations for the Botermans Fund Committee as the responsibility of the Nominating Committee.

* As recommended by the UUA office, we propose using "will" instead of "shall" in the legal language.

Amending the Bylaws is a necessary first step. Next, we can finish developing a clear organizational chart and complete related Board Policies.
