Pay Your Fees with Funds Your Student Raised
|
|
Bills are coming in for coaches, food, and transportation for the music camps, and we need all families who are able to pay their $155 program fee, camp fees, and any specific class fees.
Did you know you can pay your fees with funds set aside from student fundraising?
Seniors especially who have accrued funds by selling candy bars or chocolates or chinook books during their time in the program should consider using this money; it will go back to the program general fund if unused at the end of the school year (you can transfer funds to younger siblings). To find out whether you have funds to use, check the student accounts lists posted in your classroom or ask your student's director.

Update on Private Lessons Fundraiser
As reported in earlier newsletters, The Ballard Foundation’s Golf Classic and Auction raised an incredible $24,000 to enable directors to offer private lessons to students regardless of a family’s ability to pay. $12,000 was granted to the program for this year, and the remainder will be granted next year. These are restricted funds and the band, orchestra, and choir directors will identify and approach music students they feel can benefit from this generous resource.
Private lessons help students build skills and technical ability, confidence, and overall musicianship. We want to ensure that there are no barriers to anyone and that everyone can benefit from one-on-one coaching!
A huge thank you to all the donors who contributed and to the Ballard Foundation for making this possible!

Thank you Uniform Volunteers!
Getting uniforms fitted, hemmed, and tailored is no easy feat, in normal times, and even more tricky during Covid, especially with two years passing since any students have worn them. Big thank you to Shelley Rousseau for all her hard work hemming marching band pants, replacing dozens of broken zippers, and more. Thanks also to Jeannette Chen, Carol Cheyne, Jill Hansen, and many others who were able to help with the process. And finally, big thanks for marching band section leaders and drum majors who helped uniform check in and check out go smoothly during games. Since most parents aren’t allowed in the building yet, we couldn’t have done this without you!

Band

Marching Band will March in Auburn’s Veterans Day Parade Saturday, November 6
We are excited to be marching in Auburn’s Veterans Parade on November 6 this year. In order to do this, we will need some parent support. If you can contribute time, snacks, or water, please consider signing up here.
7:30 am - Call time at school
8:15 am - On the road
9:30 am - Check in at Parade
11:00 am - Parade starts
If you're interested in making a day of it and coming to see your students perform, please consult the map to find your best viewing location. Bands will be reviewed/judged as they march. Official judging will take place at City Hall. Please note that parade directors have asked that there is absolutely no parade parking in local business' parking lots. Please be courteous when parking in the areas surrounding the procession route.
This is a judged event and students are reminded to follow full uniform protocols. This means long black socks, no jewellery or makeup, and hair is to be kept up and under hats.
Additional Marching band rehearsals for parade:
- Friday Oct 29 during 1st period -- All students will be excused from first period and rehearse outside on the field for an hour.
- Wednesday Nov. 4, 2:30 to 4 pm
Get out your lawn chairs! Bands will be marching and playing practice through the neighborhood. Route to be announced.

Please remind your student to bring their Choir uniform home from school as soon as possible.
Clinicians Working with Students
Next Wednesday, Oct. 20th, the choirs will be welcoming Phyllis Byrdwell in to do an interactive presentation on Gospel music. Phyllis is the director of the University of Washington Gospel Choir, as well as the Minister of Music at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in the Central District.
Next Friday, Oct. 22, Concert Choir will be having a Zoom workshop with composer Reginald Unterseher and lyricist Afrose Fatima Ahmed. Unterseher and Ahmed are the composer and lyricist for the piece “This Morning”, a new composition that Concert Choir will perform at our fall concert on October 28th. Both Unterseher and Ahmed are residents of the Tri-Cities, and are excited to hear Concert Choir sing the piece and engage in a dialogue about the compositional and artistic process.
What an incredible opportunity for our choir students to work with these clinicians!
Choir T-Shirts
Choir T-Shirts are currently being designed by a student. We will be working on getting them printed and distributed in the near future.
Choir Renamed
In an effort to avoid gendered title choirs, the Men’s Ensemble will be called Tenor Bass Ensemble and the Women’s Chamber Choir will now be called Chamber Choir. Both groups are off to a great start!

Orchestra
Orchestra concert is November 2 at 7:30 pm

Ms. Fortune has also started small ensemble work, ranging from 4 people to a mini orchestra. The groups will be learning songs using chamber techniques and giving performances for each other.
Fiddlers class going strong!

Support the Program during the “From Screens to Stage” Direct Giving Campaign and Wrap Party
The October 28 choir concert will also kick off our major fall fundraiser! From Screens to Stage kicks off one of our bigger direct-giving fundraisers and celebrates the return of students playing together in person again.
Due to Covid restrictions, and because of a desire to create more casual, inclusive fundraisers, we are not hosting an auction this year but still want to find ways for families to socialize, connect, and enjoy casual student performances.
Save the date for the screens to Stage Wrap Party at Peddler’s Brewery, Wedsesday, Nov. 17. More details coming soon.
