Dear Hotchkiss Students and Families,

As you may be aware, effective Wednesday, May 20, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont is expected to ease both travel and business restrictions.

In accordance with this gradual reopening of the state and in full compliance with appropriate health and safety protocols, on May 20 we will begin allowing students and families to return to campus in order to pack up dorm rooms.

And while we are grateful to welcome you back to campus and would love to spend time with you, that's simply not possible at this time, for reasons that are both painful and obvious to us all; so we ask, while you're here, that you focus your efforts on staying healthy and collecting your personal belongings.

Below you will find some expectations and guidelines that will allow you to stay safe while packing your room.

Health and Safety Protocols:
  • Families must sign-up in advance for a slot in order to collect belongings  from campus. See sign-up information below.
  • Families who do not sign up for a dedicated slot in advance will not be allowed access to campus to collect belongings. This is a safety requirement, and we thank you for your understanding.
  • While on campus, all visitors must wear self-provided masks at all times and must maintain safe social distancing restrictions. (According to current CT state regulations, no more than five people may congregate together at one time.)
  • Visitors will enter and exit dorms through marked public entrances. For the health and safety of all, please do not use doors marked "Faculty access only."
  • Only one family will be allowed on a dorm floor at a time. ("Family" is defined as a student plus two others; you may designate others to pack your room for you--please refer to the sign-up document (see information below) for specific details.)
  • Families will be limited to their three-hour scheduled time slot in the dorm.
  • The dining hall is not open. Please plan ahead and bring food and water as few local restaurants are open.
Timing, Scheduling, and Sign Up:
  • For now, appointment slots will be available through Sunday, June 7. Additional weeks will be added as necessary.
  • Please note that our campus will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.
  • Depending on grade level, on Saturday or Sunday, all students will receive an email with a link to a Google form to sign-up for a time slot. To sign-up, students must be logged into their School account. Seniors will receive this email on Saturday, May 16. Upper mids, lower mids, and preps will receive this email on Sunday, May 17.

Packing Up:

  • Families are responsible for providing their own packing supplies.
  • Rooms are to be left empty and clean. Unfortunately, storing items on campus will not be an option.
  • There will be collection boxes in the dorm common rooms in which you may deposit:
    • Athletic uniforms
    • Library books
    • Packaged/sealed food
    • Room keys
    • Room check-out forms
  • Students will be able to access the music and art wings, and the science building if needed to pick up instruments, art, or projects.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation in this unusual circumstance.

Sincerely,

Heather Perrenoud P'22
Dean of Residential Life
