Professional Development Opportunity:
Kansas Service and Civic Engagement Conference
Join fellow civic-minded students to share your collegiate service learning and civic engagement experiences and learn more about what other students have done at the Kansas Service and Civic Engagement Conference! This program will be held virtually on November 3 and 4.

There is still time to register to attend the conference!
Student Organization Spotlight:
Alternative Breaks
Alternative Breaks provides immersive volunteer experiences that educate students and foster a lifelong commitment to service. These opportunities address pressing issues and facilitate change in personal perspectives through education, direct service, and reflection.

The AB team is currently accepting applications for their winter break program. This year, the program includes:

  • three in-person out-of-state sites occurring from 1/9 to 1/15
  • two in-person local sites occurring from 1/3 to 1/14
  • one virtual site occurring from 1/3 to 1/14

All selected participants will also participate in pre-break "classes" to prepare for engaging in immersive service.

CSL Course Opportunity:
UNIV 492- Special Projects in the Community
This winter, the CSL will be offering an online six-week section of "UNIV 492: Special Projects in the Community." Course content of UNIV 492 deepens students' understanding of service work by introducing knowledge and skills needed to carry out effective and ethical volunteer efforts.

Students can select their own service project and enroll in the "Local" section of the course, and students participating in an Alternative Winter Break can enroll in the "Alternative Breaks" section.

UNIV 492 counts as a service learning or social awareness course for the Certificate in Service Learning, which satisfies KU Core Goal 5.

Learn more about UNIV 492 and send us an email with any questions!

Civic Engagement Spotlight:
Voting in Upcoming Elections
If you are eligible to vote in US elections, make sure you have your voting plan in place to participate in the upcoming election cycle! The voter registration deadline has passed in Kansas but those deadlines, as well as mail-in ballot request and ballot return deadlines vary based on where you're decided to vote. Be sure to check those dates as soon as possible!

more resources and information!

The KU Center for Service Learning and its employees are not election officials, and their efforts regarding election participation and voter registration are made solely for educational purposes.
Service Learning Opportunity:
Certificate in Service Learning
We invite you to consider earning a Certificate in Service Learning. Obtaining your certificate involves taking classes, engaging in volunteer work, and reflecting on your service learning experiences. Once you have earned the certificate, it is acknowledged on your official academic transcript.

There are a number of steps to complete the Certificate in Service Learning, make sure you visit our website to learn more about where you are in the process or where to start if you are just beginning! The deadline to apply to graduate from a certificate in any semester can be found on the Office of the University Registrar's calendar as "Undergraduate Application for Graduation Deadline."

You can apply to graduate from the Certificate program as soon as all of the requirements are completed, even if that is before you graduate from KU!

If you have questions about your personal progress toward
completion of the Certificate in Service Learning, please email our Certificate Coordinator at serve@ku.edu.
