"It can be hard to know how children are responding to therapy and if they feel like counseling is helpful.
I worked with one kid who, at first, always focused on task-oriented and building activities while I watched. Eventually, he began to open up about his challenges dealing with adjustment and acculturation.
I asked about this change and he replied that his parents signed him up for therapy so he could talk about his emotions.
Eventually he said that therapy helped him feel like school was one of his homes and his peers were his brothers and sisters.
He also said that when he came to session, it was like all of his problems had gone away and he had time to rest without them.
This demonstrated to me that we are often helpful in ways we can’t see, just by being present." - MDCC Therapist
