Greetings!

Welcome to the August edition of IListen. Many of you are in the midst of a long weekend and your summer vacation. Perhaps you are at a cottage, visiting family or camping. I’ve booked a couple of days to do a few chores I was supposed to get done before summer started and then spend the rest of the time outdoors.
CHHA is also going camping this month – virtual camping in the great indoors – with our YAN Summercamp. This three-day event is fully interactive, and information sessions will cap off with a celebrity appearance by Just For Laughs regular and Juno nominated comedian D.J. Demers and a keynote address by Abigail Heringer from the 25th season; of “The Bachelor.”

We are also introducing CHHA’s summer student podcast in this issue. A fully accessible conversation with CHHA’s summer students talking about accessibility issues for students entering college and university.
Also, check out our volunteer spotlight, highlighting the incredible work of some of the many people throughout our networks working to improve the lives of Canadians with Hearing Loss.

CHHA Launches Speak Up! A Summer Student Podcast
Now I know what you are thinking: A podcast? How does that work? After all we are the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, hearing loss is in the name. Most of our staff and members experience hearing loss, so having a podcast –which is mainly auditory – is a disadvantage to them.
However, I believe that with CHHA using a new type of media such as podcasting, will show Canadians that every aspect of society can be accessible, including podcasts.
Catherine Dumé is one of CHHA's summer students, one of the hosts of the podcast and Speak Up's producer.
CHHA Summer Student Podcast!
CHHA's summer students, Catherine, Jason and Kaelan have released Speak Up! CHHA's newest project.

Just as the name suggests, Speak Up! is all about advocating hearing loss issues, from acquiring accommodations in university, transportation, mask wearing, while sharing personal stories in between.

To listen or watch the podcast, make sure to subscribe to CHHA National YouTube channel!

This year’s YAN 2021 Virtual Summercamp program has something for everyone from educational panels to wellness moments.

On August 14, do not miss out on Yoga with Jess: An intimate engagement with our inner selves. Jessica Niemela will guide attendees through a one-hour flow class that will incorporate some balance postures, forward folds, warrior poses, and lunges. Attendees will walk away knowing more about the importance of self-reflection, awareness, and the breath.

Just Like Me
"It dawned on me that there were others out there like me," Cindy.

I was a teenager when I first discovered I had a hearing loss. I had no idea or even realized that someone my age would be struggling with a hearing loss.

How would my friends, teachers, and extended family react to my hearing loss? At that time, I felt I did not want to tell anyone.

Instead, I chose to struggle in silence alone. On reflection, I know I wasted so many years keeping my hearing loss a secret...

What’s Sexy About Hearing Aids? More Than You Think
A hearing aid might not be the first thing you think of when you hear the word sexy. We typically reserve that word for things like sports cars and lacy lingerie, or items that are exquisitely designed with great attention to detail, style, and form.

But life is worth hearing, so it’s not a stretch to consider a device that allows you to participate more fully in the world around you, one sexy little piece of technology...
