ADULT STUDY - SUNDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS
Faces of Faith
Join us for a new devotion-based study on 16 of the lesser-known stories of the Bible that have shaped our faith.
There are many heroes of the faith, people we admire and wish to be. However, there are even more ordinary people of faith-those doing what they can with what they have to make a difference. This study concentrates on 16 bold stories of those often overlooked in our biblical narratives. Using visual art and prompts for reflection, we hope to dig deep into the worlds of these characters, entering their stories with curiosity and openness to what they might teach us.
This study has arranged the stories so that they have a narrative arc beginning with Genesis and the Hebrew stories, moving to the minor characters in the backdrop of Jesus' birth and death, and concluding with the apostles and Christians who emerged in the years after the resurrection. We will try to tackle these stories in 4 weeks but will slow down if needed.
The Wednesday class runs through May 20. This is a "lunch and learn class" so join us from 12:00-1:00 via the Zoom link on the

COMING AFTER "FACES OF FAITH" FOR THE WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY
"ENCOUNTERING GOD IN TYRANNICAL TEXTS"
Class is open to all interested persons
Our Wednesday Lunch and Learn group asked to dive into a Biblical study of women. I offered the study "Encountering God in T
yrannical Texts" as an option and they chose to dive in. This will be a study in which we struggle together with some of the biblical references to women and how we are to interpret them in a faithful manner. To be clear, this is not a women's study - Pastor Ward is planning to join us as well. The description of the book and one of the reviews is below. Like any book, we are prepared, as students, to hear the voice of the author and then wrestle with it to our own conclusions. Frances Taylor Gench is a favorite of the Union Seminary students in Richmond. All interested persons are invited to join in the class. If you would like to join us, go ahead and order your book on Amazon now because the shipping for books is a bit delayed. We will likely start the study mid-end of May at our regular time slot - Wednesday 12:00-1:00, and it will run about 6 weeks. Description: The Bible includes any number of texts that have proved to be profoundly problematic; among them are Pauline texts that have circumscribed the lives and ministries of women throughout Christian history. What are people who honor Scripture to do with such texts, and what does it mean to speak of biblical authority in their presence? In "Encountering God in Tyrannical Texts", Frances Taylor Gench provides strategies for engaging such texts with integrity- that is, without dismissing them, whitewashing them, or acquiescing to them-and as potential sources of edification for the church.
Gench also facilitates reflection on the nature and authority of Scripture. "Encountering God in Tyrannical Texts" provides access to feminist scholarship that can inform preaching and teaching of problematic Pauline texts and encourages public engagement with them.
"Frances Taylor Gench tackles Paul's thorniest texts about women with trenchant criticism, in the best sense of the word. Steering a judicious course between blatant dismissal and blind acceptance, she honestly and respectfully assesses both the harmful and helpful dimensions of these passages for the body of Christ in Paul's day and ours. As useful as this book is, however, for understanding a set of controversial Pauline texts, it is even more valuable as a sterling model of biblical interpretation-of how to wrestle with God's word with full integrity. Written in an engaging personal style (this stuff really matters to Gench!) intertwined with first-class scholarly analysis, this work provides an ideal resource for seminary, university, and parish study. A must-read for men as well as women, guaranteed to stimulate much lively learning and discussion."

WHEN WILL WE RETURN TO THE CHURCH BUILDING?
Naturally there is a lot of conversation floating around as to when church services might resume in our building. Bottom line is we don't know.
There are, however, a couple of news items to share with you.
One is the note below from Bishop Tim Smith of the NC Lutheran Synod written on May 5th. As he indicates in his letter, there is a task force working on the issue from a Synod perspective.
Two, at this moment a task force is also being put together within Advent to begin making preparations for our re-opening when that occurs. Chris Cochran will be leading this task force. There are many issues surrounding how worship would look, as you can imagine. It's not as simple as opening the doors and saying "Ya'll come".
Certainly as information is available we will share it with you. Meanwhile, stay safe and stay healthy and tune in to
adventlu.org on Sunday mornings at 10am for worship.

Some preliminary thoughts on re-gathering as congregations ....
Bless your hearts, and mine, too! A friend of mine insists that southern cliché is more mannerly code for "You're pitiful!" Jeff Foxworthy used this example: "I do believe that is the ugliest baby I have ever seen...bless his heart." In all seriousness, we might not be pitiful, but most of us have had our share of valid pity parties of late. This whole virus and what it's precipitated on almost every level around the globe simply stinks. This virus is pitiful...and I won't even honor it with a "bless its heart!"
Most states now, including NC as of this Friday evening (5/8), are in some phased and restricted re-opening plan. It remains to be seen if that was a wise decision, though clearly, we all understand that it's been a "choose your poison" scenario. Make everyone stay at home and kill the economy, resulting in all sorts of suffering, or let folks loose and kill a lot of people, causing lots of suffering. For now, there's plenty of news and plenty of posturing as to which poison is more preferable, but I'll leave that to the politicians and the pundits. For now, I want to focus on what it might look like to begin re-gathering in person as congregations in NC. If it begins to happen in a month, we need to be planning now.
For the sake of space, including my own tendency to be too wordy, I'll continue in bullet points as to what we can and do know in that regard at this point.
There is still way more that we don't know than we do know. Frustrating, to say the least. At least to have to admit it.
- The NC Synod Council has extended its no-gatherings recommendations through May. Read the May 2, 2020, Special E-News.
- Governor Cooper's 3-phase and 3Ts metrics for re-opening, set to begin with Phase 1 the evening of May 8, can be found here.
- The NC Synod Council just appointed a "Re-Gathering Task Force" to provide congregations with resources and direction for making plans to re-gather in worship or other contexts.
- Worship will not and should not look like it looked when you were last together in January. Anything from reduced numbers to perhaps not singing to not passing the plate to revised and/or delayed communion distribution. On singing, see this post,"Singing, the Church, and COVID-19."
- There's already more out there than you can possibly read about what to be considering. Not to let liability concerns drive the bus, but have you checked with your insurance company about your communicable disease coverage? What do they recommend as to your re-gathering?
- The two most helpful sets of considerations I've read that congregations should be addressing around re-gathering are: "Returning to Church" and "48 Questions to Ask Before Reopening Your Church."
- Online worship opportunities will need to be available for a long while yet. Vulnerable populations will be the last to return to worship (and by that people my age, 60, and older, and most of our congregations have a disproportionate percentage of these). Even among the younger, not everyone will feel safe returning just yet, and you might be able to gather initially with only 50 or 100 when in January you had 150 or 200. Online is here to stay.
Anyway, be looking for more info from our new synod task force in a couple of weeks, but I write this today because if we start gathering in June, your congregation needs to be pondering and planning for these new realities now. The one thing it must not be is "just like it was when we were last together." Nostalgia and sentimentality, at this point, could be deadly. Even so, I know God's got this. God's got you. We're in this together, but we have serious work to do. Bless our hearts.

Dear Advent, It has been such a long time since I have seen or spoken to most of you. I am slowly trying to re-enter the world that I have lost touch with during my illness. I have been so fortunate to have both great medical care and a family who has gone far beyond any expectations one could dream of. With everything going on in the world as well as our church this seemed the best way to reach most of you.
Thank you for all your good wishes and above all for your prayers to our Lord for my recovery. My body is slowly gaining the strength it lost due to my fall and pnuemonia. I look forward to seeing you all when we get the signal to do so.

ADVENT HAS A 'LITTLE FREE PANTRY'
"Give what you can, take what you need"
That's the idea of a Little Free Pantry. The City of Charlotte recently awarded Advent a $150 grant to set up a pantry in our neighborhood. The former library stand from the Gathering Space is now stocked with non-perishable food and has been moved outside in the parking lot under the newly-built bbq shelter. It is open for anyone to take whatever food they need and to donate excess food items for others. If you have food donations, just place them directly in the pantry.

ZOOM MEETING CHANGES
As a reminder, the church owns a Zoom account that can be used by various groups as necessary for Zoom committee meetings or small group meetings. It is, however, necessary for you to schedule the use of the account as only one group can use it at a time. Requests for its use can be made through churchadministrator@adventlu.or
g
or officeadm@adventlu.org. We will help you set up a personal free zoom account so you can be established as the co-host of the meeting.
There have been a number of security enhancements made to the Zoom tool overall in the last few weeks. It is important for those using the tool to be aware of any names joining a call who you do not recognize. The leader can disconnect that person. Also, previously when anyone used the account, they had to masquerade as Brooke Summerhour. The name on the account has now been changed to Advent Lutheran Church. Hopefully this change will eliminate some confusion for all the attendees. (By the way, you can also change your name on the screen once you're into a meeting!)

UPDATE FROM YOUR TREASURER, PAM RHYNES
I have wonderful news to share with you, church family! On May 1 the Treasurer's report for the 3rd quarter of this 2019-2020 fiscal year was sent to all of you. In that report I indicated that we had applied for the Payroll Protection Program through Wells Fargo but never received any positive news from them. At the time I wrote the report, we had just submitted another application for this program under the ELCA Credit Union two days before.
Within several hours of sending that report to you, I received an email from the Credit Union indicating that the SBA had approved our PPP (as it is called)! All I could think was how good our God is to us! As of this past Monday, the funds have now been placed into our account and we have 8 weeks in which to cover payrolls for the church employees and the APS teachers and staff. We can also use 25% of the funds for mortgage interest, utilities, and to pay the health insurance and pension payments for the 3 employees who receive those benefits. Our Preschool teachers have been paid 2/3rds of their salaries since April 10 and this will enable them to receive their full pay for the next 8 weeks! Without this funding, there would have been no other available funds for this purpose after May 25th.
I continue to be amazed and thankful at the riches God bestows on all of us. While this PPP is indeed a huge blessing, the real blessing is that our Advent family has continued to be generous with continuing offerings. I thank God daily for all of you, your care and concern for our church, and that all of you are safe and healthy.

SPONSORING AND HONORING ADVENT'S HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
Graduation from high school is a huge event for students after 13 years of non-stop school. Sadly, the 2020 class will miss out on many of the usual events accompanying graduation so this year we are adding
 some additional ways we are honoring and lifting up Advent's graduating seniors.
First, one of the seniors will be honored during each Sunday's worship service. So far, we have honored Callie Thrower and Allyssa Schrader. This will continue through the remainder of the 7 seniors.
Second, each year we ask members to "adopt" and sponsor a graduating High School senior. This means that for the next 12 months, the sponsor will check on and pray for him or her. We also ask the sponsor to purchase a "survival kit" This kit is already assembled and the cost is $30 each. If you are willing to sponsor one of these wonderful young adults, please let Brooke Summerour know by May 15th --

Tag their yard! Leave a sign in their yard showing your love and support! Example, poster board or chalk their driveway/sidewalk.
Week four (June 8th)
: Pray over our graduates as they enter into the next phase of their lives.

Though church is not in session, the need for non-perishable food items continues for the many hungry people on the street and also for some of our members. The teens that formerly made egg salad sandwiches each week are now putting together "grab & go" bags for Urban Ministry.
For the month of May, we ask that you drop off at the church 6-packs (or 4-packs) of individual fruit cups
of fruit cocktail, peaches,
and
applesauce
. They will be broken down to be put into individual bags.
You may place items on the chairs just as you go inside the admin wing (through the double red doors).

Refugee Support Services is providing fresh food and educational resources to more than 110 families a week. They need our help!
RSS has a new connection to an egg farm. (Thanks, Society of St. Andrews!) This farm gives RSS eggs every week to share.
In order to distribute these eggs, they need egg cartons. Do you have some?
You can drop them off at church and Esther Abdel-Hameed will deliver them to the Galilee Center. Please let Esther know when you have delivered any, so she can be sure to pick them up. She can be contacted at

Any ongoing help and support will be greatly appreciated during these times
- You may mail a check to the church at 8840 University City Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28213. All offerings received will go to General Fund unless otherwise designated on the memo line.
- You may use bill pay through your personal bank or credit union.
- You may use Online Giving. See the info below for details on using this tool.
- If you have a FOB and want to bring your offering by the church, please place it on the counter near the door to Pastor Ward's office.
Using Online Giving:
- You may make a one-time gift through Online Giving or you may set up recurring donations which you can modify or cancel at any time.
- This tool allows you to use a credit card, debit card, or bank checking or savings account payment.
- The church does pay a small fee for payments made through cards and American Express is not permitted because their fee is too costly. The tool asks if you'd like to add a small amount to offset our cost.
- You can also designate where you want your gift to go.... General Fund for operating expenses or other special fund. A number of special funds are built into the tool already but if your choice is not listed, you can choose OTHER and type the name of the fund you want to get credit. You can do multiple donations in one entry.
- To use this tool you can go to the Advent website (adventlu.org) and click on GIVE in the upper right-hand corner of the main screen, OR you can click on the icon here in this note, or you can click on the GIVE symbol that is in each weekly eNEWS.

Making plans for an event at Advent, are you the leader of a small group or ministry leader with monthly meetings? ADVENT SMALL GROUPS
"A great way to connect with people"

NOTE: Small groups can continue to meet using the church subscription to Zoom. Contact the church office to make your request and schedule the day/time on the church calendar.
For men: What does it mean to be a man in contemporary American society? This group meets one Tuesday night a month in the evening and will discuss current events, read books and consult the ancient texts as they seek each other's wisdom and friendship. See Pastor Ward for more info.
Theology on Tap: This group meets with new friends from Newell Presbyterian Church monthly at the Armored Cow Brewery in the Sam's University parking lot at 7pm to discuss contemporary topics. Upcoming schedule is as follows: March 24, April 28, May 26. Please see Pastor Ward or Carol Schierlmann with questions.
Micah 6:8 Ministry (new name for Social Justice group): This group focuses on issues of racial and social justice. They take advantage of local opportunities to learn about and advocate for social justice. Meeting dates and times are at 7pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Beginning book study of "America" Original Sin" by Jim Wallis. Contact is Diane Wassum.
Bible in Action: This group will study the Bible together utilizing many different platforms. Contact is Pastor Ward.

Outreach
USING YOUR VOICE TO SHAPE LEGISLATION
In our world of constant turmoil, we as Lutherans may be assisted in our mission to follow Christ by studying the ELCA's guidance on "Addressing Social Concerns".
As Scripture teaches, faith is active in love, and love calls for justice in the relationships and structures of society. Our grateful response to God's love and grace motivates us to live lives that demonstrate our responsibility for the well-being of society, communities and the environment.
In response to the ELCA call for working for social justice our Advent Social Ministry Board is expanding our mission to more intentionally support our congregation and our community in addressing social justice issues. We now have a small group dedicated to that initiative called Micah 6:8. If you are interested in getting regular updates on what's going on with social ministry/social justice initiatives in our church and in our community please join our AAA Google Group (Advent Advocacy Activities). You can join the Google Group by contacting Shannon Homesley at

If you wish to financially aid those devastated by hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, or other natural disasters, Lutheran Disaster Response will directly reach the victims.
