BREWSTER DAY CAMP          Newsletter August 24, 2020        Vol. 39 Issue 17

Dear Brewster Day Camp Family,

Every summer, on the second-to-last day of camp, all of BDC gathers to celebrate Wampanoag Day and acknowledge the history of the land we are on. The tribes of the Wampanoag Nation have inhabited the land that is now called Cape Cod for the last12,000 years. When Wampanoag Day was first celebrated at BDC, all of the camp was small enough to fit onto one school bus and travel to Plimoth Plantation (recently renamed Plimoth Patuxet), to learn about the history of the Wampanoag from the Wampanoag people. During these visits, a woman named Mishanagua shared with campers what would become the guiding principle of Wampanoag Day: "The time it takes is the time it takes."

In more recent years, we have come to celebrate Wampanoag Day by taking off our watches and going off of our Central Schedule for the morning, giving our campers the opportunity to experience camp outside the confines of time. Whether it is the time to learn a new activity, to master archery, or to learn a new stroke in the pool, the time it takes is the time it takes. As campers use their freedom to choose how and where to spend their morning, they get to see their own growth in their independence over the course of the summer.

In celebrating Wampanoag Day, campers learn about the complex history of the land they are on, and all of the Brewster Day Camp Family gets to see how we have grown together over the last eight weeks. Take off your watch, take down your clocks, and enjoy the freedom that you find away from the confines of time. No matter how you dedicate your day, remember Mishanagua's lesson, "the time it takes is the time it takes."

We look forward to sharing all of our Courage, Hope, Good Spirit & Peace...

  2. 10 seconds of video is the perfect length.
  3. Your device's microphone is sensitive, so make sure to stand close (under 6 feet) to the person you're filming so that we can hear them.
  4. Capture a few seconds at the beginning and end of the action to allow us to edit the clip.
  5. Please send us the one best video of your activity.
  6. Please send us the video unedited, videos with titles and graphics will not be used.
