BHS Students Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program
Congratulations to Baraboo High School seniors Danielle Bullock (pictured on left) and  Molly Stewart (center) and  for being named as Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship program and Maria Fadeyeva (right) for being named a Semifinalist for the 2020 National Merit Scholarship program!

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. Nearly 1.6 million students in approximately 21,000 high schools take the annual qualifying test.

Out of the 1.6 million students who take the test, only 34,000 are recognized as Commended Students and the top 16,000 are named Semifinalists. As a Semifinalist, Maria Fadeyeva will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million!

These students were recognized for their high academic achievement during the Academic Awards Ceremony at BHS on Monday.  Congratulations!
Announcing the Winners of the Attendance Matters Poster Contest!
Results for our 2019 Attendance Matters Poster Contest are in! With nearly 150 entries, our judges were put to the test to choose our eight winners. In addition to being featured here and on social media, winning posters will be printed and displayed throughout our schools.

Also, because there were so many wonderful entries we will display the "Honorable Mentions" throughout the year on social media and in our e-newsletter.

Congratulations to the following students for submitting the winning entries:
Tessa Cabaj, Kindergarten, GLW
Emma Bates, Kindergarten, West
Stella Meier, 3rd grade, GLW
Elin VonSeggern, 4th grade, GLW
Grace Carter, 5th grade, ABE
Taylynn Bell, 5th grade, East
Alliyah Harris, 6th grade, JYMS
Maya Brown, 11th grade, BHS

One in 10 students in the Baraboo School District is considered chronically absent.  Research shows that missing 10% of school, or 18 days per school year, negatively affects a  student's academic performance. Students are missing fundamental instructional time in reading  and math, building a shaky foundation for their academic future. We want to add our students' voices  to the conversation on why going to school every day is important. #TeamUpForAttendance #AlwaysOnwardBSD

JYMS Band Hosts Classroom Concert
The Jack Young Middle School Band classes hosted their fall Classroom Concerts on October 21st and 22nd! Guests were invited to the band room for a mini-performance and rehearsal demonstration.

We had more than 120 parents, siblings, community and staff members attend! All bands performed various selections of pieces ready for an audience, and then gave visitors an inside peek at what a band class looks like and how we connect music to life through the rehearsal and performance process.

Thank you to all who were able to be a part of the experience. We look forward to and invite you all to JYMS on December 9th for the evening formal Winter Band Concerts. Groups perform as follows: 6th grade 5:30 PM, 7th Grade 6:30 PM, 7:30 Jazz & 8th Grade Band. See you then!

NF Holds Annual Luminary Walk
On Tuesday, October 29th, North Freedom Elementary hosted its annual Luminary Walk. Each student decorated a luminary bag in Ms. Nolden's art class. It was a beautiful and chilly night to get out for a walk and enjoy our unique prairie!

JYMS Food Drive Begins Nov. 4
The Jack Young Middle School WEB and Builders Club leaders are sponsoring the school's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive starting next week!  JYMS will collect donations of non-perishable food items and hygiene items from November 4-15th.

This year the school will have a grade level contest. The grade that brings in the most food/hygiene donations and fills the most Thanksgiving "complete meal" bags will win a celebration for their entire grade.

A complete Thanksgiving Meal Bag will include:

Green Beans - 2 cans (15 oz. each)
Sweet Potatoes - 1 can (40 oz.)
Cranberries - 1 can (14 oz.)
Fruit Cocktail - 2 cans (15 oz. each)
Corn Bread Mix - 2 boxes or bags
Turkey Gravy - 2 cans (10.5 oz. each)
Instant Mashed Potatoes - 1 box (26 oz.)
Turkey Stuffing Mix - 1 large bag or box (6 oz. each)

Pie Crust Mix - for 2 pies (please no frozen pie crusts)
Evaporated Milk - 2 cans (5 oz. each)

In addition to food, the school is also working to meet hygiene needs at JYMS. The only items we are requesting are travel-sized soap, shampoo and deodorant. These items will be kept at the school for our students.

All items donated will stay in our community and help our neighbors in need!

NF Skypes a Scientist
Mrs. Shafer's 5th graders at North Freedom Elementary were lucky enough to be able to participate in the fall Skype-a-Scientist program and were matched with Dr. Christopher Main, a microbiologist for the state of Delaware.

Dr. Main shared a micro and marine biology slide show with the students and even took them on a tour of his laboratory to explain some of his testing equipment. Their Skype visit finished off with a question and answer session along with many connections to what the 5th graders are studying right now in science. What a fantastic experience!

ABE Authors Share Stories
Ms. McCallum's first graders at Al Behrman Elementary celebrated the end of their first writing unit this morning! Students were asked to share their story or stories with a partner for four minutes. When the timer went off, the outer circle stayed where they were and the inner circle rotated one desk to the left.

JYMS Donates to Hope House
The Jack Young Middle School Builders Club delivered a donation in the amount of $500 to Hope House on Thursday, Oct. 24. It was matched with another $500 donation from Kiwanis!

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11th. On that day, the Baraboo School District would like to thank all military service members for their service, their sacrifice and their example.

We need your help! We are seeking images and a bio of all Baraboo service members - both of veterans and those still serving. Included in the bio should be the service person's name, years of service, branch, military speciality and key deployments.

Info can be sent to swargo@barabooschools.net. Digi tal photos are best, but if all you have hard copies you can contact the above email address to coordinate making your photo digital.

Starting on Nov. 11th and running until mid-December, Baraboo High School will be recognizing these men and women of Baraboo who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

NF Students Buddy Up with Books
Third graders in Mrs. Van Den Heuvel's class read with their reading buddies in Ms. Dixon's kindergarten class on Thursday, October 24th at North Freedom Elementary.

The older students practiced fluency by reading out loud and the younger students worked on listening skills. The third graders were impressed by the progress their little reading buddies have made so far this year with knowing some of the sight words!

Lamers Bus Lines Seeking Drivers!
Lamers Bus Lines is seeking additional school bus drivers!

This is a great opportunity for individuals looking for work before or after school. It's also a great job for parents of students in the District because:
  1. There are no nights or weekends for route drivers
  2. Drivers get summer vacation and snow days, just like the students
  3. If your child is in any sports or activities, you can get paid to cheer them on and support the team by driving the team bus
Lamers Bus Lines will provide complete paid training, and teach you everything you need to know about driving a school bus.  Please spread the word to anyone who may be interested to help us ensure that our students get to school, sports, and activities on time each day.

Questions may be directed the Lamers School Bus Office in Baraboo at 608-448-4851 extension 2.  Apply online at GoLamers.com/careers.
