Leave the Leaves
Ecological Heights recommends studying your garden beds this fall and leaving as many whole leaves in the beds as you can. Decomposing leaves enrich the soil and insects of all kinds overwinter in and on leaves, so the more the better. If you have too many leaves, shred some of them with a mower or shredder and mix them with whole leaves on your beds. Thick mats of whole leaves can prepare areas you want to transform into a bed next spring by smothering the vegetation underneath. Whenever you have a thin layer of leaves on your lawn, mulch-mow them (without the bagging attachment on your mower) back into the turf. This is an organic, natural way of fertilizing the soil while also acting as a natural herbicide and pesticide. Researchers at Michigan State University have found that mulching leaves for just three years produces a nearly 100% decrease in dandelion and crabgrass growth.
Library Presents Renovation Options for Noble Branch
Conceptual images for the renovation of the 84-year-old Noble Neighborhood Branch are on display at 2800 Noble Road and can be studied any time the library is open. The 16 posters featuring possible indoor and outdoor design concepts, and the presentation by Rick Ortmeyer from Bostick Design Partnership are available on the Heights Libraries website. Ortmeyer’s presentation included several options for increasing space for library users of all ages by building an expansion where the Noble Road Presbyterian Church building and the surrounding 1.3 acres of property currently stand. The library purchased the church building and property in March. All public input will be examined and quantified, and will inform the next stage of the renovation. A request for proposals for the design project is expected to be made in early 2022.
