New Tools for Ponding Analysis for Open Web Steel Joist Roofs
Ponding analyses can be time consuming when performing this iterative process by hand, however it is required in certain situations depending on your roof slope and drainage conditions. The methods for ponding investigations in Appendix 2 of the AISC Specification can be limiting based on the requirements for flat roof construction and framing geometry. Since IBC requires a minimum roof slope, how can engineers adequately investigate roofs for ponding instability?
In the November 2020 SE University session, Mark Denavit, PhD, PE, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, presented New Methods for Ponding Analysis of Open Web Steel Joist Roofs. Mark’s session reviewed the main roof ponding requirements from design standards and described the limitations of the methods of ponding analysis given in Appendix 2 of the AISC Specification. Mark demonstrated how to use the SJI Roof Bay Analysis Tool to determine the stability of a simple roof system and explained the main factors influencing the ponding stability of open web steel joist roofs...

Scissor Lift Loads on Deck Slabs
How many times has a contractor called you asking to put heavy equipment on your deck slab? How confident have you been in your analysis of the deck capacity with these unexpected loads, or have you defaulted to denying these requests to save any headaches over the complex load distribution from the moving equipment?
In the December 2020 SE University session, Mike Antici, PE, from Nucor / Steel Deck Institute, presented Steel Deck Design for Concentrated and Non-Uniform Loads. Mike explained how to develop simple load diagrams based on the load distribution. He also explained the limit states for slab design under concentrated loads and reviewed the current and new SDI approaches for concentrated loads.
After explaining the equations used to determine the sinusoidal moments that develop within overlapping influence zones from multiple loads on a deck slab, Mike revealed the new tables contained in the Second Edition of the Floor Deck Design Manual which can now be used to determine the nominal scissor lift wheel loads for various configurations of deck slabs...

SEU Speaker Inspires Organizations: AfterHours Denver and Frontline Foods |
In July 2020 and January 2021, SE University welcomed Kim Olson, PE, from Nucor / Steel Tube Institute, to present What Your Fabricator Wishes You Knew About HSS and Navigating AISC 360-16 HSS Connection Design. Kim designated AfterHours Denver (https://afterhoursdenver.org/) for our SEU Speaker Inspires donation for the month.
Kim shared, “AfterHours Denver hands out over 400 lunches, water, socks and communion to the hungry and hurting every week in the park downtown. The smiles on the faces of the people we serve fills my cup while filling their bellies.”

STATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS
As we begin the new year, there are a number of states with license renewals due by April 30th. If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.
In the following states, ALL engineers should renew their license by the specified date:
Connecticut (January 31st)*
Utah (March 31st)
Florida (February 28th)+
In the following states, some engineers should renew their license by the specified date:
Louisiana (March 31st)
Kansas (April 30)
*These states do not have continuing education requirements.
+Florida requires that engineers use approved providers for continuing education. SE University is an approved provider to help meet both the Area of Practice and Ethics requirements.
In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.
