The Squawk!
Your Weekly Community Brief from AMMS
Monday, August 24, 2020

Thank you to all our families for helping us make the first day back to the building a success.  As with any new adventure, we did have our hiccups and snags in the process, but we are working hard to smooth it out for next week. Our guidance counselors are working hard to get schedules redone for our face to face students and also get our LaunchEd students moved into new virtual classrooms.  Please continue to be patient with us as we work through the changes.

Our technology coordinator, Mr. Walton, is available to you if you are having technology issues. Just call the main phone line 407.884.2208 and when the automatic attendant answers, hit "0" to get a live person. Let them know you need help with your laptop and you will get transferred to our tech for assistance.

This week we will be giving our first school-wide diagnostic test in Mathematics on Thursday.  This diagnostic test will be given on iReady and all students will be taking it on Thursday morning through their 1st period class. Students will be testing for 1st, 2nd and 3rd period on Thursday and then they will continue with classes at the start of 4th period. It is important your child take the diagnostic seriously and do their very best on the assessment. If your child is a LaunchEd student, he/she should work independently on the assessment as it is a diagnostic test to give his/her math teacher important information about your child's skills in mathematics. See below for more information on how this testing will work and for the details on a parent information session this week before the test.

Every day brings new challenges and with your help, we will work through them together!

Title I
Apopka Memorial Middle School goes Title I!

Title I is a Federal program that serves children in elementary and secondary schools, as well as parochial and private schools. Through this program, the Federal government provides additional funding to schools that are distributed by their State education agencies. Schools then set goals for improving student skills and develop programs to support and supplement regular classroom instruction through the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and the Parent and Family Engagement Plan (PFEP) and outline the use of those funds to meet those goals.

Title I funds will provide extra educational assistance in many ways.  Areas of support include additional teachers and aides, professional development for staff, and additional parent and family engagement opportunities.  Parent engagement opportunities include our PTSA, SAC, and other monthly engagement activities as they are announced during the school year.

To exhibit our commitment to partnering with you, please see the links just below for our Right to Know Letter.

Please contact the school with regards to any questions you may have. We look forward to a fantastic school year!

Community footnote: We encourage our families to take advantage of the above programs as they apply to your household. As the nearby chart from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York illustrates, recent months have been especially challenging for many families with children.
