It is important to note that the information in the May Report may predate many of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. 

From May 2019 to May 2020, the Tulare County Employment Report showed an increase of 10.0%  in the unemployment rate and a decrease in employment of 31,900.  Additional highlights from the recent report include: 
  • Tulare County's unemployment rate was 18.4 percent in May 2020, more than double the year-ago estimate of 8.4 percent. 
  • Year over year, employment decreased by 31,900 and the labor force decreased by 13,900. 
  • For the past two months, the unemployment rate in Tulare County has been lower than the unemployment rate in Los Angeles County; this has not occurred in any time for which data is available, going back to 1990.

HOW DOES TULARE COUNTY'S EMPLOYMENT RATE CHANGE OVER TIME?

    

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported a 10.0 percent increase in Tulare County's unemployment rate from 8.4 percent in May 2019 to 18.4 percent in  May  2020. 

The month over mont h unemployment rate decreased by 0.9 percent, from a revised 19.3 percent in April to 18.4 percent in May 2020.  This decrease was the result of the labor force declining by 3,800, not an increase in people working.

YEAR OVER YEAR | A COMPARISON
From May 2019 to May 2020, Construction was the only industry that showed an increase of jobs, with a numerical increase of 200 jobs and a growth of 3.1 percent. Farm showed the greatest numerical decline with a loss of 14,700 jobs, while Arts, Entertainment & Recreation showed the greatest percent decline with a loss of 50.0 percent.




 
MONTH OVER MONTH | A COMPARISON
From April to May 2020, Farm showed the greatest month-over numerical  gain  with an increase of 1,500 jobs, while Art, Entertainment & Recreation showed the greatest percent gain with an increase of 50.0 percent.   Local Government (Education) showed the largest month-over numerical decline with a decrease of 1,200 jobs, while Accommodation showed the greatest percent decline with a loss of 20.0 percent.
