For the Love of Handbells!
Ellie Hodder, Membership Chair
I don’t know about you, but I feel as if I’ve been stuck in a dream for the past year and a half. ”Pandemic.” That was something I read about in history books and those only happened every 100 years. The last one was in 1918. 2018 came and went (whew!) . . . And here we are!!
If you are reading this, I am very grateful to know you’ve come this far and are interested in the future . . . that’s what this newsletter is all about, our shared future with handbells.
Through it all, Area 10 has continued to offer learning opportunities online with workshops—Pacific Ringers brought you beginning cajon with Damien Lim of Singapore, conversations on creativity with Jason Krug and a workshop on safe ringing including resources on music with no bell shares. Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference brought you a workshop last fall with classes including Bell trees, Beyond the Basics, Conducting 101, So Many Bells! Taming techniques we thought were hard and Wrangling Rhythms.
In June, Area 10 Goes Glo Bell brought you instructors from around the globe with Jason Krug’s beginning composing/arranging, Bruna Marinho on Brazilian popular music, Scotland’s Malcolm Wilson on cue sheets and chord charts for bells. Canada’s Anne Hill taught us about marking music and Singapore’s Damien Lim taught a malleting class. Hong Kong’s Emily Li taught us how to ring musically and I led you in a virtual massed ring!
We’ve teamed with our friends in Canada to make sure you had access to workshops presented by the British Columbia and Alberta guilds. Even though access to one another has been limited and very different, we’ve kept information and fellowship going. WOW!!
Why? For the love of handbells and those who ring with us--you.
During the pandemic, many churches, schools, community ensembles and individuals have dropped memberships to non-profit organizations. Handbell Musicians of America is one such entity that has been hard hit. We’ve seen incomes drop and access to each other and handbells as we’ve used them has been turned on its ear.
Handbells are a remarkable niche in world music. It takes all of us to keep making music, to discover new ways of ringing, new sounds and to engage new audiences. HMA and Area 10 are a big part of helping that happen for all of our benefits. Our local volunteer leadership have gone above and beyond during the pandemic to keep us together, learning and hopeful.
If you are able, I am asking you to join (or renew your membership) Handbell Musicians of America (http://join.handbellmusicians.org) today. There are multiple levels of membership from regular handbell musician to retired, full-time student and even an opportunity to become a sub-member as a part of your organization’s membership for just $10/year.
In handbells, you always matter! Please join/renew today.
Be well. Stay safe.
Best, Ellie
