Many of you have renewed your MAFP/AAFP dues for 2020 and we thank you! We ask others to pay before year-end so we can start strong in 2020.

Why Renew? ADVOCACY
MAFP Advocates for you and your patients by:
  • building coalitions to keep primary care at the forefront
  • meeting quarterly with Medicaid
  • reviewing regulations at MSBML and testifying on your behalf
  • communicating with legislators and state officials about the importance of quality health care in our communities
We need you to keep us strong in Mississippi. Please renew today. Here's how:

Dr. Carlos Latorre, AG-Elect Lynn Fitch, Dr. Luke Lampton

Fitch Holds Listening Session
The MAFP was invited to be part of a listening session, hosted by Attorney General-Elect Lynn Fitch, concerning the opioid epidemic and other issues pertaining to addiction. Drs. Carlos Latorre of Vicksburg and Luke Lampton of Magnolia participated in the discussions on behalf of MAFP.  Family physician Dr. Randy Easterling moderated the session at Woolfolk Office Building this week.

Dr. Reeshemah Allen, MS State Dept. of Health Office of Tobacco Control; Dr. Tom Payne, ACT Center; UMMC Residents Dr. Kshama Vyas, Dr. Ivy Wicks, Dr. Shreena Dhawan, Dr.  James Craig Bullock , Dr. Michael Yeung-Lai-Wah.

Vaping Risks Shared With Residents
MAFP's Jewell Buckley organized an educational breakfast for more than 30 residents and staff at the UMMC Family Medicine Residency Program this week with guest speaker Dr. Tom Payne of the ACT Center for Tobacco Treatment, Education, and Research.

Dr. Payne spoke to the residents on the risks of vaping.  The evaluations proved the meeting a success.  Comments included, "I will put more effort to counsel my adolescent population on dangers of vaping and give them options to quit. Prior to this session, I was only asking about drugs, cigarettes and alcohol."

The discussion gave the family physicians confidence to have the right conversations with their patients.  "I now feel informed to educate my patients on consequences of vaping and helping them quit."  The presentation included chemical information on vaping and risks associated when smoking and vaping are done at same time.

The breakfast and education session is provided by a grant from the MS State Department of Health Office of Tobacco Control to the MAFP Foundation. MAFP Foundation supports a smoke-free Mississippi.

MAFP Capitol Day has a new date, so mark your calendars now. We will showcase Family Medicine for our elected officials, so we need a large number of family physicians to take over the Capitol on Thursday, February 13.
