See what is happening at Grace Lutheran!
September 2, 2021
This is a quick weekly reminder of what is happening at Grace
in worship and in ways to connect and serve.
Pastor's Message
We are a community of faith united by God’s love to listen, grow and serve in Jesus’ name so that all might experience grace.

Listen

As I drove to work on Tuesday morning a friend unexpectedly affirmed me. “You’re a good listener,” she said. I was taken aback for a moment, because as a preacher, everyone knows I can talk circles around a lot of people. I am never lacking for something to say. And yet, these were the words I needed to hear in this moment.  I like to think I am a good listener, but the truth of that might be debated. The reality is too often I have the microphone. I can silence a crowd quickly and I can fill that silence with any number of things: instructions, prayer, welcome, encouragement, opinions and sometimes judgment.

For me being a good listener is more than just being quiet. It means that I will be reflective on what you have to say. It means that I am going to let your words, your truth work in me for a while.  This is what my friend meant when she described me as a “good listener.” It wasn’t that she didn’t recognize my ability to speak, but that she recognized my own decision-making, my own understanding of the world is willing to be transformed by what someone else has to say. I will not only listen in that moment, but I will reflect and consider your opinion or your thoughts. I am not done learning yet. Nor will I ever be.

I want you to know people of Grace that I want to listen to you. If a sermon on the weekend upsets you or rubs you the wrong way, please come and have a conversation with me. I don’t want to be the only one who has a voice when it comes to God. I don’t want to be the last word. I hope that our preaching on Sunday morning isn’t the end of the conversation, but the beginning of a dialogue, an understanding and an exploration about God, the world and who we are called to be. I know there will be things that you disagree with. That’s okay. We are not supposed to agree on everything. But we are invited to learn and grow together by listening. I want to do this with you!

I want you to know the door to my office is open. I want to take time to meet and talk with you. Please come and have coffee with me, or let me take you out for pizza. Let’s listen to one another and recognize in doing so we are listening to God.

Blessings,
Pastor Joanna Mitchell

First Communion

Children of all ages are welcome to the Lord’s Table. Historically at Grace, children in third grade have been invited to receive first communion instruction. However, if you believe your child is ready, we welcome them to participate in first communion instruction. In the same way if your child is older than third grade, but they haven’t yet received communion instruction, they are invited to attend as well. Parents and children are required to attend this class together. Following our first communion class, children will receive their first communion in worship on October 3rd at either worship service.
Own Your Faith

We are so excited that you are entering your OYF year! We have had three great years together in Catechism and this year is going to be even better.

We also have an important and mandatory informational meeting on Tuesday, September 28th at 6:30pm.  To make it accessible to all students, parents and mentors, the meeting will be virtual.  The zoom link can be found below. If you are unable to attend virtually, please contact Kristi.  If you cannot attend the meeting live, we will send out a recording.  However, it is best if you can join us live in case you have questions, etc.  If you cannot watch it live, please watch it within a couple of days.
Catechism

Catechism is a 3 year program that helps middle school age students grow in their relationship with God and with their peers. During weekly meetings students worship together, play games, meet in small groups and learn about how they fit into God’s Story.

Not sure if Catechism is for you? Want to hear more? Don’t worry! There is an important informational meeting on Wednesday, September 8th at 6:30 for NEW Catechism students and their parents. Join us to hear more! There also will be time for Q & A.
Wednesday Evenings At Grace

Wednesday evenings beginning September 22nd to Christmas. Have you ever wondered what God is really like? There are so many stories in the Bible about God being a king, or a warrior, or our savior. We know that God is the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but what does that look like and how might we experience that.   This year on Wed. evenings, we are offering opportunities for people of all ages to explore this question: “What is God like” using the new children’s book by Rachel Held Evans.   From 6:30-7:30pm children, catechism students and adults will meet to have age-appropriate learning. We will end our time together with worship from 7:30-8pm. Register on realm today!

Administrator’s Corner

Hello Grace Family! It has been a while since I posted on GAAG. As many of you know, our family is currently going through some medical challenges. I cannot express how grateful and blessed we are to have such a supportive congregation. Your prayers, cards and words bring so much hope to us! Thank you! With the hospitalizations and multiple medical appointments, my work schedule has been thrown off a bit. I am able to work remotely for some items and I’m trying to come in to the office at least twice a week. I understand the inconveniences this causes and appreciate your grace during this period.

I’m excited to report the Building Committee has met with Busch Architects several times over the summer and we are very close to having some great plans to present to you for improvements and growth. The new electronic sign looks FANTASTIC which we hope will become a sort of beacon to our communities to come and experience Grace!

I have received a couple of concerns regarding accessing folks’ information via the Realm mobile app. We found there are some privacy prompts that are causing some folks not to be “found” on the app. We will be re-issuing the privacy prompts globally, meaning if you do not want your demographic information found (name & phone #) you will need to manually update your profile (we can help you with that). Thank you again for keeping our family in your prayers. God bless you!

In Christ,
Frances
