DISTRICT 6 REPORT
Investing in neighborhoods and infrastructure
As I shared with residents when I was sworn in to office, my priorities include improving parks and streets in District 6.

During a workshop on Anaheim’s budget at our last city council meeting, the council received an update on projects under the city’s Capital Improvement Plan, which is a five-year plan to invest $211 million to improve public infrastructure such as streets, parks and libraries. The first year’s projects are set to be approved when the council adopts our annual budget later this summer.

Projects proposed for District 6 include:

Parks:
Oak Canyon Nature Center – New outdoor laboratory near the year-round stream, expanded amphitheater to accommodate the current standing-room-only crowds, interpretive trail signs and interactive exhibits
Yorba Sports Field – Improvements are planned in the western portion of the park including a soccer field, parking lot and trail
Electrical: Upgrades to streetlights to install LEDs, improving pedestrian safety and roadway visibility
Street Rehabilitation: Restore pavement structural integrity, improve driving comfort, replace damaged curbs, sidewalks, signs and pavement markings on Riverdale Ave. and Orangethorpe Ave.

Traffic Signal Coordination: Upgrade existing signal equipment to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion

Standing up for local control and protecting families
Senator John Moorlach recently sponsored SB 689 which provides local control over needle exchange programs. As you may recall, last year, a group received permission from state regulators to distribute thousands of syringes to drug users near Anaheim parks and schools and was later sued by our city to halt implementation.

While I support treatment options for residents suffering with drug addiction, my priority will always be to protect our neighborhoods, children and families from encountering discarded needles in parks and playgrounds. I believe local cities – not the state of California – should decide whether needle distribution programs are appropriate in our communities.

That’s why I was honored to join Sen. Moorlach and council colleagues from Orange and Costa Mesa, as well as District Attorney Todd Spitzer, at an event set up to talk about the bill. And at our meeting this past Tuesday, my colleagues and I passed a resolution expressing our support for the legislation as it moves through the committee process.

I hope you’ll join me in supporting Senator Moorlach’s good bill to give cities more control over the distribution of needles in our neighborhoods.
Update: Keeping the Angels in Anaheim
With the news that the Angels are extending their contract with Mike Trout, I’m more excited than ever to reach a deal to keep the team in Anaheim – and I look forward to our negotiating team bringing us a deal for our review and the public’s review.

Our city manager and staff gave the following update on the negotiations at our last city council meeting:

Since negotiations with Angel Baseball are still in the beginning stages, city staff has been primarily focused on completing the stadium site appraisal process. Steve Norris, with Norris Realty Advisors, was selected by the city in order to conduct the appraisal and staff has been working closely with him as he begins the process. Staff anticipates that the appraisal will take 90-120 days to complete.

Another item of note is that Angels Baseball has recently informed the City that they have retained the services of a development consultant to assist the team on exploring development opportunities on the stadium site. This is important since analyzing and planning for a variety of development scenarios of the existing stadium site will be an important part of the negotiation process moving forward.
Sincerely,
