Toddler Activities
What can toddlers do in the summer?
Toddlers can do so much! There’s all sorts of summer fun and learning for toddlers to be doing over the summer – the world is their oyster. When you’re thinking of summer activities for toddlers remember: kids don’t need fancy to have fun. Toddlers need simple, easy, and open-ended activities – they don’t need lots of frills. Playing is learning, and they’re going to play all summer long.

FROZEN FAIRY TALE SCIENCE FOR PRESCHOOLERS
It’s no surprise that we love  simple science  for preschoolers and school-aged kiddos around here! Chemical reactions that fizz and foam are among our favorites.

Frozen-inspired science for preschoolers
Like our  fizzing letters  and  “exploding” pirate treasure chests , this experiment centered on baking soda and vinegar. It never ceases to be a fun learning experience, and there are so many ways to change it up!
Engineer helped me create the frozen royal treasure the night before we introduced it at summer camp. We measured and mixed, then added everything to our ice cube trays. The trays stayed in the freezer overnight to make sure they were frozen through and through. The next morning, we popped the “treasure” out of the trays and set up our experiment.

How we made it
Ingredients for the frozen treasure boxes

Directions for the treasure boxes
1. Mix 3 cups of baking soda with 1 3-oz. packet of Jell-O powder.
2. Add 1 cup of water and stir completely.
3. Add glitter and mix more.
4. Place the mixture into ice cube trays.
5. If desired, add some “jewels”.
6. Place the trays in the freezer overnight .

Summer Science
Is a bubble always round?

Most bubble wands are circular, so is that why bubbles come out round?

What happens if you use a different shaped bubble wand? Can you make a square bubble? Try it!

You Will Need:
  • 1/4 cup liquid dish soap
  • 4 cups water
  • Bucket
  • Pipe cleaners or bendable wire (or drinking straws and clay)
  • Straw or pipette tip
  • 2 Tablespoons glycerin (optional) Adding glycerin to the bubble mixture makes the bubbles stronger and last longer.
  • Materials & Directions PDF

Ask your child to create a testable question.
  • Example: Will a triangle bubble wand make a triangle-shaped bubble?
  1. Using the pipe cleaners or bendable wire, create bubble wands of different shapes and sizes.
  2. Mix the dish soap (and glycerin) with water in the bucket
  3. Dip your custom-shaped bubble wands into the bubble mixture and blow bubbles. What do you observe?
  4. Construct a cube using pipe cleaners (or wire or straws and clay).
  5. Dip the cube in the bubble mixture and pull it out slowly.
  6. If a square bubble does not instantly appear in the center of the frame, dip the end of your straw in the solution, insert into the center of the cube and gently blow a bubble within the cube. What do you observe?
  7. What if you construct a 3-dimensional triangle, does it make a triangle-shaped bubble?
