Caring Matters
May 2020

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation's observance of Older Americans Month. This year the 2020 theme is:

Make Your Mark

This year's theme highlights the difference everyone can make - in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities.

Share Your Stories

Stories build community, connect us even when we can't be physically together, and provide sweet memories and entertainment when we can't get away. Caregiving can be all about organization, planning, feeding, dressing, driving, all taking away from time to learn and share.

Try to spend some time just being together and sharing - whether on the sofa, over the phone, on the computer, in a letter, with old photos or over the backyard fence. Ask about or recall and share adventures about childhood friends, that family weekend at the beach, a teacher who helped guide your life, or how you learned you would become a grandparent - all of those stories connect you with the past and the people who have mattered along the way. Not only do they help people you love feel closer to you but looking back at how we got through other tough times can help us manage this challenging time. Sharing what we love about our friends and family members helps them feel stronger and more connected.

We can make a mark on people's lives with the stories we share.
"An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered."
- G.K Chesterton

We think it is appropriate to try to come together to support one another during this difficult time.  Each of you represents an organization that is keeping guard of the most vulnerable during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.  At Transitions GuidingLights we hear you...we hear that you are getting tired and are working so hard as healthcare professionals, parents, and friends.  We would like to bring you together for an opportunity to receive some replenishment and validation.

Cumulative Loss and Grief Response due to COVID-19
Speaker:  William Holloman, Manager Bereavement & Family Services at Duke HomeCare & Hospice
The COVID-19 pandemic brings new loss and grief on a daily basis. Many of the losses center on our individual way of life.  Whether the loss is in the area of employment, finance, socialization, safety, predictability of the future, or death the cumulative nature of these daily losses can feel overwhelming.  Complications can arise when grief exhausts individual coping skills.  Understanding the grief process opens avenues of opportunity to develop or enhance effective coping skills and assist in identifying the multidimensional impact of loss on our daily lives.

You will receive a Zoom invitation with the meeting details closer to the meeting date.  Thank you.
