Family Prayer

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Isaiah 35:4-7a
Be strong! Fear not!
  • Today’s reading from Isaiah looks forward to a coming age of glory, when all Israel’s infirmities will be abolished.
  • This will be the age of the messiah; God’s anointed one, who comes to bring salvation to Israel.
  • The power of evil will no longer manifest itself in sickness or afflictions of any kind.

Reading II : James 2:1-5
Did not God choose the poor to become rich in faith?
  • The reading from James draws our attention to affliction and oppression.
  • If you shun people with physical impairments and those who are poor, you have missed Jesus’ message.
  • Faith in Jesus is expressed by working to free oppressed people.

Gospel : Mark 7:31-37
He makes the deaf hear!
  • Today’s Gospel story portrays Jesus’ healing as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy.
  • The deaf man with the speech impairment who is brought to Jesus is a Gentile.
  • The man is healed when Jesus touches the parts of him that are weak and impaired.
A Message from Mr. Oberdorf
Hello,

I hope all is well with you and your family. What a great first week of school. It was exciting to welcome students back. It was so much fun meeting many of you on Monday during supply drop off day. The students' first full day of school was Tuesday and it was a great start. There was so much energy and excitement. Students learned the expectations, practiced routines, renewed old friendships, and started learning. It was wonderful watching the interaction between the teachers and students and seeing so much love and joy being shared. It is evident St. John the Evangelist is a special place.

Reminder: Our parent night is tonight, Thursday, September 2 at 6:30 in the church hall.

Parents will have an opportunity to meet new and returning staff members. The evening will consist of a short general information session and two 20 minute sessions to meet with your child’s teacher.

Our first school Mass will be Wednesday, September 8 at 10:00. Unfortunately, due to social distancing, only students and staff members will be able to attend. Hopefully, we will all be able to celebrate together soon.

An exciting day on the calendar is our Back to School Fun Run and Tailgate Party, September 10 starting at 5:00 and sponsored by the Home and School Committee. This will be a fun-filled evening complete with food, games, and togetherness. Please RSVP by September 7 for the tailgate party. A waiver must be signed for all students participating in the fun run. Please join us for the fun. Students will have an out-of-uniform day on Friday, September 10th. (forms are available on our Thursday Folder page)

The St. John the Evangelist Home and School Committee is seeking new members. The committee puts together many events such as the fun run and tailgate party, the cookie walk, and trunk and treat. The committee also puts together many fundraisers throughout the year such as a pizza sale, restaurant nights, and plant sales. Please consider joining the committee to help out with this valuable work. If interested please contact Samantha Rios 414-614-1047.

Dear SJE Families,

THANK YOU for volunteering your time and talent in our garden this summer. With your help we had another successful growing season. As our garden continues to flourish, its care will now be turned back over to the students.

Our garden is a valuable resource for our students and an extension of their classrooms. Your summer help continues to make that possible, and we are so grateful!

God bless you!

Snack Cart

Looking for a healthy snack for your student? We are happy to announce that our Snack Cart returns for the 2021-22 school year. We will have it open Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30-7:45. We offer yogurt, cheese sticks, applesauce, Belvita Breakfast bars, carrots and dip and crunchy cereal. All items are 50 cents! You can pay as you go, or purchase a Snack Card, good for 11 snacks (1 free!) for $5.00. Send payment to the office in an envelope marked "Snack Cart Card" with your child's name. We will keep the card at our cart so students can purchase as they would like to! We will honor snack cards left from the 2019-2020 school year.

Help support this wonderful resource at our school with snack purchases!

An Invitation to Join the Schoenstatt Girls:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to invite all girls in grades 4-8 to join our Schoenstatt Girls' Groups which meet monthly from October - May! This year, the 4-7th graders will be meeting directly after school from 2:45-4:00 pm on the third Wednesday of each month, starting on October 20th. The 8th grade girls will meet at a separate time and place, still to be determined.

The Schoenstatt Girls and Young Women are part of the Schoenstatt Movement, which is a Marian Movement in the Catholic Church, devoted to striving for holiness in everyday life and transforming the world in Christ, through Mary. In the girls' groups, the girls grow in their relationship with Christ and Mary through activities, crafts, games, discussion, and prayer. The goal of the groups is to help them to live their faith in their daily lives as reflections of Mary. For more information about the program, please see the flyers on today's Thursday Folder Page.

I hope that your daughters are able to join us this year! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

God bless,
Sister M. Faustina Yank
