National Hispanic Heritage Month (Spanish: Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana) is from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. September 15 is a significant date because five Hispanic countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) all declared independence on September 15 in 1821. According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, there were 112,451 Hispanic producers in the United States. Between 2017 and the previous Census of Agriculture in 2012, the total number of U.S. producers increased 7%, while the number of Hispanic farmers increased 13% (USDA). AgriSafe is working to expand resources available for Hispanic/Latinx producers in agriculture. Available for viewing and distribution, check out AgriSafe's resources and webinars available in Spanish here!

October is Health Literacy Month – a time when health organizations, literacy programs, libraries, social service agencies, businesses, professional associations, government agencies, and other groups can work together to integrate and expand the mission of health literacy – to build a world where all individuals have access to quality health outcomes.
-
Personal health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. Examples of personal health literacy include the ability to understand prescription medication directions, interpreting blood sugar readings, and navigating complex healthcare and insurance systems.
-
Organizational health literacy is the degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. Examples of organizational health literacy include using the Teach-Back method and providing patient information in plain language.
